Question Oil Pan Gasket change

f150 noob here.

Yes I know there's threads about this but wanted to be sure before embarking on this.

Just bought the truck...96 f150.....perfect...except the oil pan gasket is all squished out and it has a little leak, so I want to replace it.

Shops are wanting 300-400 bucks to replace it. They say this one is a pita to change.

Yeah, the Haynes manual, blah, blah, blah...i have it but it sucks as usual. The pics on the Autozone "repair info" site are tons better.


Plenty of threads say that you can do it without lifting the engine...just dropping it low enough to put the gasket in is good enough.

what I'm worried about is the front and rear of the oil pan, where the tranny goes...are there any other seals that I'll be screwing up by dropping the pan, or just oilpan gasket should cover those areas?

drawings show 4 piece gasket installation where there's a separate piece for the front and rear and then 2 on the sides. I'm guessing it's a one piece usually?

I changed mine ('95 F150) a few years ago, and did not have to lift the motor. I got a real nice, blue, 1-piece gasket that came with some plastic studs that screw into the block and sorta-kinda hold the gasket in place until you get the pan back on. The only problem I had was the gasket slipping loose and falling into the pan a couple of times (I forgot to hold my mouth right).

Once I got it mostly in place, I started the screws one at a time, and just a couple of threads. That way, as I moved around the pan I could push or pull the gasket to line up the next screw. Once they were all in, I tightened them in stages, going around the pan 2 or 3 times 'til they were all equally snug. I cleaned everything in reach or in the way before, during and after, which made the job much more enjoyable.

The whole thing took about an hour or two, and it hasn't dripped a drop since.

Thanks pchristman....I just finished up about an hour ago....and no leakage to speak of.

It took me about 3 hours...but that was me just going slow so I wouldn't screw anything up.

I just dropped the pan and took the old gasket off...it was just a mess. Some of the holes weren't even lined up with the holes on the pan..lol.

The only snag I had was when feeding the new gasket around the pan, the side part fell into the pan and got hung up on what I guess was the oil pump. I tried to get it out, but I didn't want to pull on it and screw the innards up so

I just cut the gasket in one place and it was fine.

Well, my first 150 project....so much easier and roomier than the toyota 4x4 I constantly fooled around with.
