I am thinking about trying it out.

I have a 92 IDI NA that to my knowledge has never run in veggie.

The only close source of Bio is B100.

Can I go fill up without making any changes to the truck?
Do I have to Replace Rubber Return lines? If so with what?

Someone said to be prepared to replace the fule filter because the veggie will clean out the tank and lines. Is this true?


Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it is true. I switched over to B20, but started with only 8 gallons of it in an otherwise full tank to have an "intriductory" blend of only 5% for my first tank. Within 200 miles, I started feeling surging and lurching at low speeds, and my fuel pressure gauge was doing a lot of bouncing around at idle at 57-59 psi where it normally runs rock solid at 61-62 psi.

I changed my filters and things got better. I'm still not over it yet, and will probably have to drop my tank this weekend and go ahead and clean out the gunk that is swishing around back and forth under my pickup tube in the tank.

You probably do have some rubber lines somewhere in teh system, and they may not be bioD compatible. I would recommend starting with only a 10% blend and working up from there... it might be a PITA to do this if that one station doesn't have both dinoD and bioD, but it will be a safer approach.

VO and BioDiesel are totally different animals so don't confuse them.

 

Biodiesel will find any way to leak out where #2 won't. Found on my 92 a pinhole in the fuel line with B20 but wasn't showing with B5 or #2.

 

I was told I would have to change my filter too. I started w/ B50 (about 4 tanks) then B75 (6 or 8 tanks now) Runs fine and havent had a problem. Havent changed the filter either. Saving up for my BioPro unit.

They are rather expensive, but I dont have much time. This will be alot quicker for me. Not to mention it pizzes me off to pay $3.05 for diesel when gas here is $2.55. Heck it pizzed me off when we paid $2.55 for diesel. LOL

 

Update on my situation.

I did not have to drop my tank this past weekend. Everything has cleared up in fuel performance in the engine, and it's running great. I have since filled up with another tank of B20 and will evaluate fuel pressures this weekend, and only change the filters if necessary.

$8K for a BioDiesel processor is really expensive especially when you can build a very nice Appleseed for <$500

 

From thier Spreadsheet. It takes 3700 gallons - 74 batches at 45 min of your labor per batch in order to break even. That is total.



My Math says that is over 55 hours of your labor.



This does not take into account the time and money required to acquire the waste oil. Unless your local McDonalds delivers. Waste oil may be free now but don't expect it to stay that way for long.

 

For me to pay off that system I would have to save at least $2 a gallon for four years. Then I would have no issues but as it has been said WVO may not be free/cheap for long....

Final math is four years to pay for itself for me....unless I drove a ton more....or get less mileage....

 

Sorry Barehuggs for jumping in, but reading the BioDiesel site, I am thinking you need some sort of mods to run anything over B20??? And then Pete, I see your on this site, does the bio help with the lack lubercation caused by the sulfer content being reduced? Then, what level helps. The dealers close to me only run at B2

The biodiesel at the B2 or B5 will give the fuel that it will be as though it had the lubrication of the old 500ppm sulfur fuels. I would reccommend that if you have an older IDI engine which was designed for the high sulfur fuels then get a fuel additive of some kind. If your vehicle was designed for the low sulfur diesel (LSD) then it's a maybe on the lubrication.
