What Oil Brands Do You Recommed?

Work with me.
I'm tired of taking my truck to get an oil change and getting a $75.00 bill!
I KNOW gas engines.
I used to be a mechanic in my earlier 20's.
I can do a LOF.
I can rebuild or trouble shoot any older vehicle.
But I don't know squat about diesels.
I have a 1995 7.3l
I want to be able to repair the simplest things that go wrong, like glow plugs, the harness, codes, ect.
I got the fuel filter and water bleeder valve down ok.
My friend got me hooked up with an Amsoil air filter system.
I check the anti-freeze with the strips and add the additive when needed.
So in the future I will probably ask some pretty basic questions.
I will use the search topic first.
I did not find my answer to my next intrest.
Oil.
Which are the best brands for diesels?
What weights to use in the winter and summer?
Our summer temp is 85 tops and only last about 1 month. Avg. temp in the summer is about 70 degrees. 2 months.
Winter temps get down to -30 with the wind chill. We usally only get this for about 1 month. Our average winter temp is about 45 to 30 degrees.
Average yearly temp is about 50-60 degrees.
Which oil brands to stay away from?
Filters I know, from taking a Hydralics course at the Tech School.
Napa Gold was the best made and Fram was the worst. We opened and broke down 6 differant filters.

I would be intrested in your guys findings on oils.
Thanks. The new guy. Gman

FYI, I did order an oil anylist kit just to see what's going on inside. I figure it's a cheap insurance policy.
Thanks again.

John Deere Plus 50 15w-40...a little expensive, but I get a real good discount. About 3000mi on this change and the oil is still clean, I never had this with rotella. I use motorcraft filter FL1995.

Hello and welcome, the winters here get cold, so in the winter I use Esso xd3 10/30 and change back in the spring to xd3 15/40 the 10/30 seems to help with the cold starts, lots of people use 0/40 synthetic in the winter ,but in my op. it is too expensive for the few months of winter GOOD LUCK!

Welcome aboard Gman. Any "diesel" rated oil with an API rating of CF-4/SH or CG-4/SH or higher will do just fine. Ford recomends 15W40 for normal climates, the 10W30 for temperatures below 20 degrees fahranheit and for temperatures below -10 degees, 5W-30 is recommended.

Check out this site: http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/home.html It has alot of information on our trucks and engines, i.e. service, oil & coolant recomendations, service intervals, how the injection system works, etc.

Here's another site: http://pages.prodigy.net/stevebaz/_i...az/index3.html with good info and a bunch of mods that you can do cheap to boost power. Remember, the only stupid question is the one that you do not ask. We are here to help each other.

Don't forget to check with the major fuel suppliers in your area for bulk oil (5 gal buckets). They usually have it cheaper than at auto parts stores, but not always.

I have always used Delo 15-40. Here in NM the coldest we will see is in the teens and I run the same oil year round, also gets up to 100 and teens in summer.

I understand the price with getting your oil changed for you but some things to consider are how and where are you going to dump the old 14 quarts of oil? How much is the oil and filter if you buy it at wally world? I found the filters to be ~$10 and the I dont remember off hand but I figured it was about $50 total. I get charge $65 at the jiffy lube and it takes them 20-30 minutes. Sure I double check everything they touch but this is what I have done with the truck for 255,000 miles every 3-5k, just giving my opinion.

FYI, as far as getting rid of the old oil, if you check with most oil change places they are happy to take your old oil because they sell it to a recycler. Also I know that Advance Auto takes old oil. You can get NAPA/WIX filters from fleetfilters.com for $10.69 ea, buy $50 and take 5% off. Just my $.02

Jeremy, I second the JD 15-40 Plus 50. The oil always looks good even for a 5000 mile change. We use it in every diesel engine we own.

I just started using it in my truck my last oil change and I really like it...im not sure who makes it for deere but its high quailty. On of the guys I work with swears by it he uses it for everything from his lawn mower to his chevy blazer to his pickup. His chevy blazer has close to 200,000 miles on original engine and its had deere 15w40 in it since new.

I bleed green... lol. That's my saying as well. I can't remember off the top of my head who manufactures JD's oil. I just looked on our 55 gallon drum and it just says JD on it. I've thought about switching to their synthetic but we'll have to see.

Its good stuff I really like it, the deere site gives all the specs on the oil and they do recommend it for pickups.
