New Plug Wires & Plugs Opinions?

I talked to my brother & he said I might see an improvement if I replace the plugs & wires in my truck.
He said the wires looked pretty old (they are motocraft) & said if I replace the wires I might as well do the plugs at the same time.

I was planning on using the Bosch 4, the one that has 4 places for the spark to "jump" too, they are $4 per plug.

He reccomended I use Spitfire plug wires, which run about $40.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Garrett

Those gimmick plugs are crap. Don't waste your money. If you want splitfires, just get cheapos & file a notch into the tip of the ground electrode, but buy 2 sets because you'll be changing them out soon.

Just get some Autolites and some 8-9mm name-brand wires and you'll be good.

If i were you i would hold on the wires. Take your ohm meter and test them. Ford says under 7000 ohms per foot is ok. Don't waste money if you don't have too. And plugs go with autolites.

I noticed a big difference when I installed the Ford motorsport wires, NGK plugs, and NAPA/Echlin cap and rotor. But I also replaced the ignition coil too, so that had something to do with it too. I have no complaints with the wires or the plugs.

You are going to notice an improvement with new plugs and wires, but do it right. They don't make the plus4 for the 300-6, and I think platinums are a load of crap anyways. Just use Autolite 45's (46's if you have any mods), and get an Accel Universal wire set. This is one of the most noticable differences I have made on my truck.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I wanted to comment on this post though:

The Distributor cab looks brand new, it must have been replaced THIS summer, so that won't be necessary.

I'll have to get the rotor though.

I keep hearing Autolite (once upon a time was owned by Ford), but isn't Motorcraft (official Ford parts) the preferred plug?

Possibly, but Wal-Mart carries Autolites cheap, and they're at least as good as MotorCraft.

Do you think since my plug wires are motocraft, they might be the original wires?

Good chance depending on the miles. On my wife's Aerostar the original wires were numbered to each cylinder, but the Motorcraft replacement set was not. Not sure if that is consistently done, but if they are numbered, my guess would be original.

Wouldn't you think its about time I replaced them then, especially if they are 11 years old?

I would probably just replace them. You can test them for spec on resistance, but you also need to be sure they are not leaking (arcing to ground--look for little sparks from the wires in the dark with the engine running). On the wife's aerostar there was no question about replacing them (and the cap) when rusty powder came out of two of the boots as I pulled them off the cap.

Well, I just checked with JC Whitney & I can get Splitfires for $1.99 per plug after rebate, & I can get a set of Splitfire plug wires for $34.99 after rebate.
My total would be $46.93 after rebates+ shipping.

3MPG!!!

Wow, that would be nice, I am getting 12.5MPG right now
