I need you guys opinion on something. I recently sold my 2000 F150 4.6 because well frankly I can't own something that produces less torque than I do. I am trying to decide between two trucks. One is a 1997 F250 XL 7.5 4X4 with 41K for $13K, the other is a 1974 F250 Ranger 7.5 with unkown miles but it looks really clean for $3K. Obviously these trucks are not really similar and I can afford either one but they each have their attributes. The 97 is in really good shape and would probably need nothing. The 74 which is also clean may need some work but it would be cool to have an eventually cherry 74. Anyway any viewpoints would be appreciated.
Try to get the 97 for 10k and use the 3k you saved for the 74. Or you need to figure if you really need the 97. Will it be making you money as a work truck or do you need a good hauler every once in a while? If you just want a truck for commuting every day get the 74 and use the 10k you saved for gas. It all depends how you are going to use it and how you can justify it.
Hey thanks for all the replies. No I don't need it for work as I have an 05 F350 6.0 for that. I was just going to buy it for driving around town, Home Depot ect. I have been leaning towards the 74 though. I figure in ten years it probably wont be worth less like the 97 plus I can run any state of tune since there is no smog needed. There is just nothing cooler than a cherry older truck. Even just half cherry.
The internet is a GREAT source of technical information and a great place to exchange ideas. The internet, however, is NOT a good place to get opinions. There is only ONE opinion that counts and that is your own.
buy the '74 and use the 10K you saved to buy gas, I find it helps rationalize keeping something that gets 15mpg at best. Plus like you say you'll always get looks and comments.
Gas is never a concern ( hey it's tax deductible), besides my 2000 F150 4.6 5 speed only got 13 mpg average. My biggest pet peave is not having enough power so I should be able to make a 460 that handles THAT problem. In fact I am selling my 1973 Chevy 1/2 ton 350 because of not enough power and frankly it is rusting out.
The 97 is going to have mass air, and will get better mileage than the '74, will have overdrive, will haul a heavier load, and will tow a heavier trailer, and maybe even ride nicer?? Tough choice, I like the 97, and I like the 73-79 (but would prefer a '79, or just the front grille shell.)

The '97 has an onboard computer and far more smog emissions crappola and electronic this and electronic that....that require codes to be pulled to fix. The replacement parts for all of this mishmash must match the truck's Calibration Code. Gone are the days when you can simply just substitute one part for another. The fuel system with its relays, combined fuel pump/senders, switching valves are a PITA. All these parts are expensive. The '74 has none of this crappola.
The 74's value is on the way up, the '97 is on the way down.
