Intermittant problem. LOTS of black smoke/no power
I'm having a weird problem. Every now and then, weeks apart, I'll leave for work in the morning and when I get out of my neighborhood onto th main road, I'll have almost no power at all, and I'll see thick, heavy black smoke POURING out of the tailpipe. After a minute or so, the engine will wake up and everything will go back to normal. I've searched on the site, and all I've found are posts for people wanting more smoke, but nothing with a complete loss of power associated with it.
I'm wondering if it's the wastegate, I don't hear my engine popping off like it used to. I'm ordering a boost gauge and a pyro for it tonight so I can see what the engine is doing.
Any idea what's going on here? This is on a 2003 F250.
Thanks

EBPV may be sticking. Did this just start since it has started getting cooler in the AM? Have you cleaned your EBP tube and sensor?
EBPV= exhaust back pressure valve
EBP tube= tube from pax side exhaust manifold that goes to front of engine to the EBP sensor (right above Water pump pulley) they tend to clog with soot. remove and clean this tube with brake Kleen and a piece of .085 weedeater string. clean sensor with BK and a small pick/file. CAUTION: there is a diaphragm inside sensor. do not puncture with pick or file.

I pulled the sensor off and it was completely clogged. I removed the tube and cleaned it out with carb cleaner and weed eater wire (.080 was all I could find). The tube was partially clogged, but still had a little hole in the center of it, lots of buildup on the inside so the inside volume was greatly reduced.
I can definitely hear the turbo pop if I let off during a hard accelleration. I hope this cures the problem I was having before. It was just so infrequent that I couldn't reproduce it to troubleshoot.
Thanks again for the suggestion.
