Has anyone installed one of the new ABS headliners in a 56? I am asking because I was looking at one, but I have installed a overhead console in the center. I was wondering if the headliner could be split down the middle and install as two seperate pieces to allow for a 8" wide console full length of the top of the cab. My console, with the way I mounted it and its design will sit where headliner goes, more recessed than under it. Any help would be appreciated.
Do you already have the ABS headliner? If not, and you want to do it, make a cardboard headliner pattern and make a center line and then cut out the correct amount. If I were you I would try to not cut the whole thing in half unless absolutely necessary. Do you already have the console mounted? Also you may have to put some foam or somthing to make the headliner come down to meet the console. That way there wont be a gap when you get it installed. Let me know how it turns out,I work an an upholstery shop and we do all kinds of custom stuff.
I just sat thru a presentation by Rod Doors and we talked alot about headliners. It seems feasable to cut out a portion to accomodate the console. However, you may lose some of the intregal strength designed in the liner. They make them tight so that the tension holds them in place. A phone call to Rod Doors seems like a good idea. They are very willing to discuss techniques and problems.
If it were me, I would install the headliner and adapt the console to fit snug to it. Jag

Lastchance55---I would try to keep it in 1 piece--like they said!! Can't you try the consol over the abs headliner? The rigid-ness of the abs will be gone if you cut it in 1/2.........Hey cardboard template it 1st.....You could take cab off and flip it over--easier to install--hahahah!!!! ....Bill
Rod doors is no longer on my favorite suppliers list. I ordered 4 drop down AC vent doors from them by phone. took two followup calls and 4 weeks to get a partial shipment of 2 along with some of the parts for the other two and no instructions for any. When I opened the box I found they were HUGE! I couldn't find room for even two of them under my dash. I called them and was told they do not accept returns, but since they hadn't shipped the entire order they would cancel the back order on the other two and I could return what I had received but I would have to pay a restocking fee of 25% on the entire order + shipping, even tho I hadn't even received the entire order!!!!
No where in their print catalog or online website is the dimensions of the doors given, they look small in the picture, nor is there any mention of a restocking fee for returns.
Their customer service SUCKS big time IMHO. If you do buy any rod doors products be sure to buy it thru a dealer who allows returns or ask about returns/restocking fees before ordering.
So True/AX!!! I will no longer deal with a company that wil not take back their merchandise and if they do--still want a re-stocking fee. I think there are enough companies out there TODAY that will honor a return without a fee....I am pissed thet NPD sent me a glove box and there are no self holding nuts on it. How in the heck will I install it!!!! Then I saw Mid Fifties sell them separately and on their pamphlet says--that will teach you to buy elsewhere!!! LOL I am still not happy with the headlight wiring from Mid-50s either but came up with a idea and made them work.......Bill
Sorry Rodney for high-jacking your thread---must vent!!!!
