I just finished rebuilding my 360 about 4 months ago. the engine seems to run ok in 3rd or low 4th gear. but if you get it above 45 mph. it starts to stumble like it isn't getting enough gas. also I can not get a good idle out of this engine at all. I have adjusted just about every thing that can be adjusted, timing, choke, idle mixture, ext...
right now I have the idle screws backed out 2-1/2 turns. does this sound normal? I also have the choke closed a little. I have traced vacuum and can't find any leaks, also checked the carb spacer. it seems fine. any ideas on what the problem could be? I am thinking that it is fuel problem.
P.S. the carb is a Motorcraft 2100. Just been rebuilt
Choke should be wide open when warmed up. The idle mixture screws usually wind up about 1 1/2 turns out and that's the initial setting about rebuilding. I don't think I've ever been more than 2 turns about after final adjusting.
You might check your fuel pressure. Just connect the gas line to a pressure guage and start it. It should run long enough to get a reading with the gas inthe carb. 4 to 6 pounds is OK.
You could to a volume test too. If its pumping 1 pint in 20-30 seconds it OK.
Might want to check float height as well.If not already done, I have a holley 600, it seems to be vey touchy if the float is not correct I get the same symptoms. I also had a similar incident, found out my idle fuel passages where slightly blocked, this happened even though the carb had less than 1k miles on it, so a rebuilt carb can still become clogged.
just an idea!
