I have a 77 F100 2wd automatic with a 302. I was replacing my exhaust manifolds this weekend and had to take off the starter to get the passenger header in place. I removed the starter and noticed metal shavings inside the tranny. What does this mean and what needs to be done about it? If the tranny needs to be rebuilt, any suggestions on what components to use and cost. Also I am not sure if the tranny has ever been worked on, I am curious if I should drain the fluid and replace the tranny gasket and filter.
One more topic!!! There is a clunk noise coming from the rear end when the truck is shifted into reverse. Any ideas what this could be(possibly the ring and pinion, but not sure)? Also where is the identifier stamp on the rear diff, (I think it is a Dana 60 10 bolt rear).
Thanks, I have replaced the u-joints with the heavy duty lithium greased ones.......the clunk it still there. Next step it to grease the spline. Thanks.
