MPG and Fiberglass Bed Covers

Anybody have any idea how much a fiberglass bed cover will effect fuel mileage?

I recently added one of these bed covers. I am not seeing a huge increase my MPG numbers, maybe .5 MPG, if any.

It did make my truck quieter going down the road.

I really didn't notice any signifcant increase either, my dad's 05 F-150 picked up 2 mpg highway though. I just like the fact I can put stuff in the bed and don't have to worry about some one taking it. Now my bed can work as a trunk instead of just and open bed.

I really like the lockable storage but it is going to be a pain taking it off a few times a week to go riding, Ill end up leaving it off... If it was saving me 3mpg or something I would think twice about it, but apparently it aint.

Thanks for the info.

PS: Its Silver, like new and I have it listed in the classifieds...

My highway mileage also increased by .5 MPG with the fiberglass cover. City driving didn't really do anything. It is great for keeping things dry and locked away, and not having to worry about shoveling snow out of the bed in the winter.

Yes these things are HEAVY! Mine is very easy to remove and I can have it off in 5 minutes, but my wife complains when it's her turn to help me unload it. If you have to remove often for oversized loads, look into the Retrax rolltop covers. http://www.rolltopcover.com

Mine is pretty easy to take off. Weighs 50-60 pounds, You can do it yourself if you are careful. It's a bit ackward to carry, but I use a hand cart.

They even give you hardware to hang the cover in your garage when not in use.

Retrax claims a 10% mpg improvement. I would imagine the molded fiberglass units would have better aerodynamic properties than the roll top. Im guessing they are exaggerating a tad...unles you guys are only getting 5mpg highway to begin with.

With the Retrax rolled up, how do you tie down a few bikes in the bed?

Well, Mythbusters proved little to no gain. I don't have one, but have heard from a couple of folks I know that it was little to no gain as well. Buy it for the protection of stuff you put back there and looks instead!

The main reason I got one (truxport) for my 08 F-250 was to keep the bed from getting leaves and debris in it and clogging the drain holes. When it's parked the bed slopes forward. My old 84 F-150 would have gallons of standing water in the bed after a heavy rain. Brian
