4.2L 2001 F150 Engine miss at 1500-1700rpm
Hi all. New member here. As the title says, my truck is missing between 1500-1700 rpm. It also feels heavy and gas mileage is horrible. I hae replaced the plugs and the fuel filter. Engine miss disappeared about a week then started up again. I have been researching and read that it "may" be bad plug wires or bad coil or vaccuum leak. I have checked all vaccum lines and I didn't see any cracks on the elbows or lines themselves. I may just bite the bullet and replace the plug wires and the ignition coil, she's got about 112K miles on her anyway. Anybody here have or had the same problem and what did you do to fix it? Any help or suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

You might try checking for OBDII codes before replacing parts. If it is missing, and you can feel it, there should be a code. If your SES or CHeck engine light is not lit, you may have an ECM problem. Look under the hood at night and check to see if you get a light show, indicating plug wire breakdown.
First things first: Air filter and fuel filter should be checked too.

thanks for the suggestions. i did replace the air and fuel filter about 5K miles ago. i worked on her today and replaced the coil pack, plug wires, cleaned the maf with electronic contact cleaner and also cleaned the battery posts. running like a champ again and i took a 40 mile trip today and already nticed a gain in mpg, i'll see how long this lasts. i will update in about a coouple of weeks.

Glad to hear things are better.
I have been busy/out of town a good bit lately.
Had I posted prior to your work, I'd have suggested plugs and wires.
Both are known to cause what you described - I had it myself on my 2000 once I got to around 80,000 miles. (approx 2.5 years).
Plugs and wires solved it for me.
Thanks for the update and glad to have you here at FTE

Thanks for the welcome Brian. So far I am pleased with the results of replacing the coil, plug wires, 2 bottles of STP Fuel Injector Cleaner and maf cleaning. I now have around 200 miles and half a tank of gas. No signs of engine miss either. So if this goes on, 400 miles out of 22 gallons (?) of gas would be around 18mpg. Not bad for a 2001. Will update after a couple of weeks.
