1995 Aerostar 2 wd 3.0 If the timing belt was to break would it ruin the engine or could it just be replaced? A friend said depending on the type of engine it was would depend on the damage to the engine.?IN the past if something happened to a belt or chain on other cars i simply replaced it.
Aeros don't have a belt, they use a timing chain and gears. They don't break, they stretch after a billion miles.
It's not a zero-tolerance engine either, so a failure, however remote, won't damage the upper end.
Not all 4 cyls are the same, you have to check them out. My '88 TBird TurboCoupe had a turbo 2.3l 4 cylinder that did not have an interference engine. I found out at 60k. Just as I was getting ready to replace the belt it broke about 2 miles from home. You don't get any warning, follow the schedule!
It is a chain drive to the camshaft, you wont damage the combustion components but a chain lashing around inside a casing is still not a good thing. Luckily, they don't break very often!!!!
If it does stretch you might loose a little on performance, since valve timing will be slightly affected.
