These modular engines are known for 'using' oil. What you're describing is very common on these engines, though some people don't use any oil at all, I think you'll find that most people have to add oil between changes. I know on mine it uses about a half quart every other fuel tank or so. I've just gotten used to checking it every so often and topping it off when it needs it.

Mine easily uses a quart every 3000 miles, most domestic auto makers claim 1 quart in 1000 miles is acceptable and will not do any warrenty work if your engine is uaing at that rate.

My Expy uses about a quart every 3K. Spark plugs never look like they have oil on them and the antifreeze is also not contaminated.

Check your PCV Valve. It is a common problem related to oil consumption and is an easy cheap fix. I keep mine changed but a friend of my wife had complained about the very same problem on hers and I replaced it for her and it cured the problem. I was involved because she took it to a shop and they were telling her she may need an engine blah, blah, blah. I fixed it for about 5 bucks.....

What kind of oil are you using? Checked your oil seals? What's the mileage on the truck?

Actually I just replaced my pcv valve and hose assembly, so my oil consumption might be less this go-around

I did some research on this well over a year ago, as we had a sudden use of oil. I played around with some things but never even ended up putting a new pcv on. The problem just went away! There were many similar stories about intermittent oil consumption back when I was reading up on it here on FTE. What I did since then, is 1st change to 5w 30 oil like is recommended (I was running 10w 30, since we don't see cold much (not real cold anyway)), then the next OC I went with the 5w 20 semi-synth that Ford says is ok for our engines.

I'm thinking it was a combination of the pcv maybe sticking and my running the heavier weight oil? Never the less, oil consumption is now about half a Qt. in 5k miles on ours...

My 2002 Expy uses about 1/2 a quart between oil changes. I keep a spare quart in the back so I can top the level off as needed. I've gotten used to it.

Same here, I use M1 5w30 and i have seen my oil consumption go from 1/2 qt in 5k Miles to 1 to 1.5qts and then back down in the same interval. The just for the sake of checking i actually tried M1 15-50 for one change and the consumption actually went up!
I've heard in the 5.4 engine forum that using OE spec. Motorcraft syn-blend 5w30 or 5w20 is the best solution to lower oil consumption, although that was never proven.
I continue to use the M1 stuff because i like the extended intervals, so adding a quart once in a while is Ok for me I guess.
