My headlights turn completely off/on while driving. Sometimes turning the switch off/on gets them going again. It also seems turning on the high beams may make it worse but not sure. It also seemed that when i wasnt moving they tended not to cut off as easy which leads me to believe something is loose. Any help would be appreciated.
pull the switch and feel if its getin warm(behind the dash),mine did the same thing and a new switch fixed it. alot of time also the dimer gets corroded and not work rite
Yup, usually a bad switch. Using the bright lights makes it worse as it draws even more current thru it. Really bad with Halogen lights(instead of old sealed beams).
The wiring is not heavy enough to run halogen without using relays. You already have a voltage drop with std headlights. There is a circuit breaker (behind the instrument panel) that is tripping on high amperage, the reason for blinking.
I have had this problem several times on old fords, it seems to be common. Once it was the light switch, another time it was a bad dimmer switch on the floor, the terminals were corroded. Another time was on my budys old Bronco driving it back to Denver from LA. This time it turned out to be a bad wiring job at the solenoid by the battery.
Hay JDENVER, glad you mentioned the dimmer switch, when i made the post i had forgotten that also could be the cause, i had that problem myself going through sacto, Cal.. I had hit the button with my foot and the lights flickered, then i hit the dimmer switch and they went off a couple seconds, it got fixed the very next day....
I had a 71 Bronco that did the same thing, when you hit a bump the lights would go off. Replaced the headlight switch and everything worked fine after that. (should have never got rid of that Bronco)
I had this problem years ago. I was told about the hi-beam switch and the dimmer. It turned out to be neither. It was bad wires. The wires pass right by the battery box. Mine was in bad shape from year of corrosion. The wires were falling apart. It was going to ground. It only happened while I was traveling because all the bumping would make it go to ground.
Dark Wolf, that is funny. The Bronco we drove from LA to Denver had no winshield wipers, heater, radio, etc, due to electrical problems, we hit snow and cold all the way home. Had to borrow a squegee from a gas station to keep the snow off the windshield. Straightest 68 Bronco I ever saw, best road trip too. My friend got rid of it and has regretted it ever since.
It may be the circuit breaker in the headlight switch is getting overload and hot . . . . cutting off . . . . . cooling down . . . . . coming back on . . . . . repeat. Try a new headlight switch!
