I'm currently trying to get a new key for my 06 ranger and in the instructions it say i need the two keys that came with the truck to make the third.
my problem is my truck was purchased used from eastern motors and they lost the one of the original key and never fixed the issue will i be able to make a key and get it programed without costing an arm and a leg?
will i be able to make a key and get it programed without costing an arm and a leg? Only if the Ford dealer you go to will accept something of lesser value than an arm or a leg. When I was in your fix I was forced to go to my local dealer & got away with paying just $100, and that was only because I had a $75 certificate I got from a class-action lawsuit against that dealer.
I bought 2 keys on EBAY and my local dealer programmed and cut the both for $40.00. So I got two for $60-$70 The tech at the dealer ship took my truck and hooked it to his little computer and while it did it's magic he continue wit the job he was working on when it finished he let me drive it back around front to the cashier where he meet me with the new keys.
When I got my car I went to ford to get a key and FOB they only charged me for parts. It helped that I went in on a Saturday and they had some mechanics looking for work.
-- In 2006 I had 3 keys programmed for my F150 after I ran up the big bill I mentioned a few posts ago when I lost my 2nd key. Since this discussion thread started I checked & found I had lost my 3rd key, don't know where or how.
-- It's not good to have less than 2 keys due to the problems described in this thread.
-- I went to my local locksmith & had a 3rd key cut. He only charged me $20. However, the key he made could not be programmed. He plugged his new key into some electronic device & it said the key had no transponder in it, although it was marked as having one. This was his last compatible blank so he refunded my money. Then he got on the phone with his supplier trying to find out why he got a dud from them.
-- I went to the Ford dealer I had bought my F150 from, got a new PATS key cut for $35, tax $2.88. I could program it on the first try.
-- For me the procedure was:
(1) Take 1st known good key, turn to 'run' for one second, turn off & remove.
(2) Take 2nd known good key, turn to 'run' for one second, turn off & remove.
(3) Take new PATS key, turn to 'run'. The 'theft' light comes on & stays on about 3 secs. At that point the new PATS key was able to start my F150.
The whole programming procedure took less than 10 seconds. I now have my 3rd PATS key again.
