I have been changing oil for over 30 years, I have always used 5000 mile intervals, with no oil related engine problems . Which is exactly what Ford recommends for the '08 V10 when used for towing, stop and go, dusty environment, etc. So 5000 miles is what I am planning on doing . (I did change my first two at 1500 then at 5000, from now on it's 5000). My chevy car says 7500 miles between changes. Modern oils are very good stuff. My vehicles usually have 150K to 200K when I sell or trade.
I read an article in one of my Harley mags a couple of years ago about oil.I t was pretty informative. It talked about the different additives in the bike oil, some of which the diesel oil also has, that help with lubrication. They don't let them put these in the car oil in an effort to keep from plugging up catalytic converters. I'm not sure if these only help at high heat levels, or just in general, but with the new requirements on the diesel trucks, I wonder if they will remove these additives from the 15w40 also. The article suggested that you should NEVER use car oil in your bike, and if you can't find bike oil, then the next best thing is the diesel oil. It also said, however, that the synthetics are a totally different animal altogether.
