Here's a question I have about Tow/Haul mode on the 5R110W transmission.
First, the transmission isn't a 5 speed, it is a 6 speed. Old stuff, we've covered this before. It skips either 4th or 5th depending on the weather.
On cold engine operation (below 0 degrees) the overdrive clutch is engaged in third gear for a ratio of 1.09 : 1. The transmission will shift directly to sixth from fourth and fifth is skipped. On a warm engine the shift pattern would be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th (direct drive), 6th.
But, I came across this reference in the 2007 Owners Manual:
Tow/Haul feature (5–speed automatic transmission) (if equipped)
To activate, press the transmission control switch (TCS) located on the
gearshift. The TOW/HAUL indicator light will illuminate in the
instrument cluster. The transmission will operate in all gears. Press the
transmission control switch again to deactivate Tow/Haul mode.
Is this saying that if I keep my truck in Tow/Haul mode I will have a 6 speed automatic?
I think it is just referring to the fact that it doesn't lock out overdrive (6th gear) like the earlier transmissions did when you hit the switch on them. As far as I know it still works as a 5 speed.
I have to agree with beerstalker, because I've counted the shifts and it's only five, in or out of T/H. Plus, Ford is secretive about the 6 gears and I don't think they want the user to ever experience 6 consecutive gears.
As I vaguely recall the ratios, 3 and 4 are so close together that if it shifted to both of them you would probably think something was wrong with the transmission. It would feel too much like a slip.
