390 help

Hi guys,

I need to know what the power was on a 76 f250 4x4 with the 390 with headers otherwise stock, it has a 4 speed, and a divorced transfer. Also if anyone knows what gear ratios were available in that truck I would apreciate it. Thanks for the help, I don't have any books or anything on this truck, and no owners manual either, agian I apologize for my ignorance , Mason

390 help

Mason, can you tell us what year the 390 is ? 4x4 trucks came with a 360 or a 352. If you have a 390 it has been transplanted. 2 or 4 barrel carb ? DF

390 help

It is a 2 barrel, and is a 76 model on the engine spec on the valve cover. It says it is the 360/390 engine family, and says it is a 390 cid. The owner of the truck has had since new and said that the 390 came in it from the factory, it is the original motor, and she also said that when her and her late husband picked it up it had the headers on it new. I believe that they may have not put a 390 in a 4x4, but I believe this lady fully. Either way it is a 390 now, and the 390 is a 76 model too. Thanks for the info, Mason

390 help

Mason, The lady may suffer from a little CRS, no doubt she thinks she is telling the truth. Grab a white jacket 14-2 piece of house wire and remove the front spark plug. Place it in the hole and a sharpie against it while resting on the manifold. Have someone rotate the engine with a socket on the crank bolt for a couple revs. and then measure the length of the mark. 3 1/2" you got a 360, 3 3/4" a 390. The dealer may have installed the headers for her husband, but not the factory.
Do you want the truck, do you like the way it drives and handles? Buy It!

390 help

Thanks for the replies, I talked to the guy that sold the truck, and was a good friend of thiers, he is long retired now, and he said that her husband had the dealer put the headers and 390 in it before he took delivery. It was ordered with the 360, then they put a new 390 in it, with the headers. The deal fell through, so I will just have to repair my chevy for now, and wait to get a ford. Thanks so much for the info, Mason
