Its time for me to do a little tune-up before winter comes along, so I was curious as to what brands of sparkplugs and wires people have had good luck with.
I have heard that for our engines (I have a 351W) the standard autolite/motorcraft plugs seem to be the ticket. Is this the general consensus?
Is there any other things that I should pay some extra attention too? I am at about 145000 miles. Any thoughts?
Yeah that is the general consensus. You can order Motorcraft plugs, wires, cap, and rotor from Rockauto.com for a pretty decent price. Those are 8mm wires so if you want to run the 9mm Ford Racing wires I think they can be purchased at Summit.
Cool! I didnt even know that my thread actually posted! hehe, after i clicked post, it sat there for a while then gave me the this page can not be displayed stuff. then I couldnt even open there homepage. I was gonna try again later, but I got an email notification, and I guess its all good.
Anyway... At how many miles should cap and rotor be replaced? Ive done spark plugs and wires before no problem, but havent done the rotor before. Anything I should know?
Guys around here typically say that the distributor cap & rotor are good parts to replace on every tune up. I'd say that if yours are original then its about time you replace them.
If the truck is mostly original, just keep an eye out for cracking/brittle vac hoses, and keep up on your tune-ups. Also, if you haven't already, change ALL the fluids. That is, engine oil, tranny fluid, gear oil in both diffs (if 4wd), power steering, and possibly the coolant if you're so inclined. Other than that, theres really nothing SPECIFIC to look for that I can think of...

I am coming up on an oil change in about 500 miles, at last oil change, I flushed and did trans fluid, and was planning on doing the diffs in the near future. Could also use a coolant flush, thanks for reminding me.
Truck is doing awesome rustwise - Its a 95 F150 Supercab, NO body rust at all, which is a super rare find for North Dakota, since roads are probably salted around 6 months out of the year. Have any ideas for preventative measures for fenderwell rusting? Its from water that pools up inside, right? Is there anyway to drill some drain holes or something? I havent taken a close enough look to see where water could sit, but am gonna investigate this weekend.
I could have been more clear in my last statement, about how solid the whole truck is. I have been up under the truck checking things out, and I am very impressed with how clean the whole thing is.
I'd give it a real good cleaning underneath sand/scuff it up and put somerust bullet and rubber undercoating onto it...another thing.....Might wanna replace the coil while you're at it....whenI got my truck a year ago it had the plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil from the FACTORY......needless to say the tune up did it well.....I was impressed with the plugs when I pulled them....not bad atall.
I use autolite plugs, wires and bronze tipped (not aluminum) cap & rotor like accell. The aluminum tipped cap & rotor has a tendency to not hold up. I'd also consider changing the air filter & the fuel filter especially if you don't know when they were changed last..Just my $.02 Good Luck!!
