Best gear ratio for a F350 4x4 7.3
What is the best all around gear ratio to use for a F350 7.3PSD 4x4?
Recently bought a 96 F350 PSD 4x4 with 4.10 gears and they seem way too short, so I would like to swap the gears for something a little lower. I thought about 3.55, but don't know what's the best way to go about doing it. I know some others have posted here about doing this swap, but I don't know how they came out.
I don't want to spend much $$ for the swap, and I'd like to exchange either gears, 3rd members, or entire axles with someone, if anyone is interested. If I have to buy parts, I would buy the gears from someone like Drivetrain Spec and install them myself, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to. Don't want junk yard parts, either.
What axles would this truck have? I've heard it should have a Dana in front and Ford in the rear. Does anyone know what axles they should be?
Also, I looked up geaaarsets for Dana and Ford, and one sells a 3.55 ratio and the other sells a 3.54 ratio, Is this OK? or do I need to make sure I get exactly the same ratio if I were to buy the gears?
Enough questions for now. Thanks for any help you guys can give. I'm new to this and can sure use some guidance.
