Front spool in Dana 44
Ok im building a 78 f-250 spercab 4wd. Im lookin into traction assisting devices. I was thinkin about a full spool in the front. Wouldnt it work like the stock front when the hubs are unlocked? If so how would is handle in snow and ice when locked in 4wd? This is gonna be a work truck. Anybody who knows anythin bout a front spool please comment.

front locker is one of the best investments you can make. get something selectable like e-locker or ARB. that way you have 4x4 whenever and then 4x4 locked when you hit the front locker.
most people will tell you not to do it on the front with a D44 but for a worktruck it would do you lots of good.
if you are going to be battling ice and snow i highly recommend you stay away from spool/weld b/c you cant control it as easily.

Crazy, like Fish said you want a selectable front locker. That way you can have a open diff in 4x4 when you on the snow and other, when you are doing some serious straight line stuff you hit the switch and lock the front solid. This is real hard a 44, hopefully small turns/low hp or you will start breaking stuff. A good ARB locker is close to a grand.

The ARB, air compresser, lines and all won't come cheaper than $800.
I know I couldn't afford it, and figured I'd try and drive smart(so I wouldn't go through shafts like a ****...), so I go a Aussie Locker. I really like the thing. It is just like the Lock right, but it's stronger, cheaper, and quiter.
Automatic locker, so it disengages/ratches when you turn. I got mine on evilbay for a little under $200 shipped, but new they are about $230 + shipping, stil cheaper than a lock right, and not a whole lot more than a spool.
IF you can afford it, the ARB is the suppirior way to go, but for a tight budget, the aussie locker should work.

Ok guys ill just throw it flat out. This truck is gonna be for haulin and pullin. The traction devices are basically for my loud mouth chebby drivin family. I wanna have a little trick up my sleeve for when they wanna hook up. None of them know about the whole 4wd scene its just the "my truck is the best cause its a chebby" attitude i wanna do away with when i can. None of them know what a locker is or a twin stick and all that stuff. So im gonna use everything at my reach to make them put up or shut up.

Key to "hooking up" is gear ratio, traction and leverage.
Gear ratio: You have a 4.10 and they have a 3.50 = you usually will win
Traction: You have wide tires and they have skinny tires = you usually will win
Leverage: Your bumper hitch or hook point sits higher than theirs = you usually will win
All these are considering everything else is equal or atleast close. If you have all 3 of those key components and something doesnt break and your tires dont slip. You will win. Hooking up was big around here 8-10 years ago. Ive had more than one strap hooked to my hitch....lets just say that. Won some lost some. Had fun but I was young and stupid.
I got a few tips if you want to know. Just be careful.
