Hi Guys,
Almost embrassed to ask but I'm not that proud. I need to replace the pinion seal in the rear of my 52 F1. I've done a lot of different things on cars and trucks but never have dropped a driveshaft before. Please if someone could reply to this. It looks like I need to remove two ubolts holding the driveshaft to the yoke. Do I also need to remove the otherend or is it ok to let the driveshft hang? I'll support it with a jackstand or something but would it be ok to only undo the end I need to work at? Then I need to remove a large nut to get to the seal, any trick to that?
Basically if anyone could point me in the right direction to do this I'd appreciate it.
It won't hurt to let the driveshaft hang. I wouldn't attempt to do the seal until you know for sure. Some rearends you will change the pinion preload and like the 9 inch have a crush sleeve on the pinion that only works once. It may not be as simple as getting the big nut off and putting it back on. Rear end guys, where ya at?
Be sure to chock the wheels. If the truck is in gear or has a parking brake on the transmission and you disconnect the drive shaft it can roll. I heard of people getting run over doing this.
I took a long bar (the same length as my torque wrench) and drilled two holes along one edge of the bar. I put two bolts into the flange and it will hold the flange from turning while you remove/replace the center nut. I had to grind some of the bar off to make room for the socket that will be used to loosen/tighten the nut.
Worked great!
