Ok been following differnet threads here since I inquired about the F450 4.30 vs. 4.88 gears and fuel mileage some time ago. I know the tow rating is downgraded for the manual trans, and you cannot get the 4.88 with the manual. That being said, is the trans really weaker than the torqshift, or is the clutch? If any care to share, what are your mileage differences between the 4.30 equipped 450s with a manual and a auto. Please list if its 4X2 or 4X4.

 

One other thing, I have heard the term 1st and 2nd generation, whats the difference? Pre and Post IH/Ford litigation?

I would give you some info if I had any to share. Mine has 4.88's and the auto. It is a great tranny. My guess would be that 4.88's with the manual, you would spend an awful lot of time shifting and the engine would probably tend to over rev quite a bit.
