E150 4.2l
Good afternoon. I posted a response to this thread some time ago about my delivery van. It is a 1998 E150 cargo van which as I write this has 650,378 miles on it. I installed a used motor from a 2000 F150 with 31,000 miles over six years ago. This now has 337,000 miles on it. Since owning the van I have rebuilt the tranny once, 251,000 ago and replaced the rear end once.Being a contractor in the delivery business I maintain my vehicles religously. However this weekend was spark plug change time and the #4 plug pulled the threads completely out of the head. I was searching the forums for ideas from others having this problem when I decided to post here. I know it's not the wright place to ask but any help or better yet direction to turn would be appreciated. By the way, my second van is a 1998 E250 4.2l with 357,344 on it. The motor and tranny have only 23,000 miles on their rebuild. Have a great day !!!!!

Mine's almost done. 224K and she burns more oil than gas. No complaints here, she gets beat like a disobedient prostitute.
Gonna grab a junkyard motor (got my eye on one that's only got 57K). It'll be more work than the last swap I did since I'm puttin a 03 in my 98. But I'll git'r done.
This forum has been a key part in me making it that far. Thanks guys!
Cheers,

I myself have no experience with 6 cyl's of any sort but in 97 a friend of mines old man retired his 86 F150 w/300-I6 at 620,000(km's) so...~385,000 miles. He replaced it with a 97F150 4.2, and a 5 speed. As of 2 years ago, before i moved to where i live now, the 4.2 had surpassed that 620,000 and was still going.. iirc it was in the 650,000km range and as far as i know nothing major had been done to it. So it made it past 400,000 miles..........
I have no idea if its still going, but i talk to that friend every few weeks so i'll ask him about it see what it made it to.
The thing was treated very well, and properly maintained.
It also averaged significantly better fuel economy than the 300.

higher mileage 4.2
g'mornin. i've been lurking here off and on for a few years and finally overcame the log in issues i was having.
I've got a '00 F150 XL 2wd work cab and long box that i bought in '02 with only 22K miles on it. 4.2 6, 5 speed. it now has 127360+ on it. and the original clutch is still going strong.
initially i was getting 23-25 mpg but now with some age on her it's down to around a flat 17. it's had a new set of tires at 95K after the Goodyears that were on it finally wore out, a new set of plugs at 110K ( i went with the E3's to try to pick up some better power) 2 alternators, and a battery ( factory, at 8 years old) besides regular servicing at a dealership. I run it on a diet of regular pump gas thats loaded with ethanol (ick) and full synthetic lubes from front to rear, top to bottom.
my biggest issues have been keeping good solid brakes on it. i've gone thru one complete rebuild minus a master cylinder and booster, but it seems i just can't avoid massive fade after the 2nd peddle application,.., being that I'm in the PacNW and we deal with massive amounts of rain, and all the traffic is geared to rice burners with automatics, i use the hell out of my brakes.. any suggestions for improvement would be very welcome.
I'm not in the habit of babying my truck, but neither do i abuse it. i'm hoping this truck lasts me another 10 years and still has it's original trans and motor when it finally retires.
now that i'm able to log in and see the boards, i'll be spending more time here. This seems to be a great place to learn, and you guys are great at sharing the wealth to keep our trucks rollin..

4.2, 99 F150, and I've got 161,200 miles so far. Had to replace the radiator, (funny, coming home from work a couple of years ago the upper hose literally blew itself off the radiator), hoses, battery, other normal maintenance, that's it so far. I tend to not want to give up on a vehicle easily. Damn things cost too much!

I had about 120,000 on my 4.2 1997 E250 when the lower manifold gasket went and destroyed the engine. It's three years later and I'm finally sticking a refurb in that I picked up for $1700 with a 4 year / million mile warranty.
Who makes a good gasket that won't fall apart like the old ones? I'm doing the engine install this week.

My 2002 F150 4.2 manual ran fine until ~101,000miles - I spun a rod bearing. I pulled the motor and rebuilt the bottom end only with new bearings and I had to get the crank welded to repair the rod journal which cost about $400
The truck now has ~146,000 miles and the engine runs fine.
My main problems have been with the clutch slave cylinder, which I have had replaced or replaced myself 6 times. And now the front seal of the 8.8 differential has failed and leaks gear oil.
I almost swore off Ford forever due to the slave cylinder problems. After owning 11 different ford cars and trucks,I decided that you can't judge an entire company based off of the base model cheap pickup.
I'm going to pull the body off of the frame and use the frame for a my '55 Ford pickup with a built 460 big block.
