'79 radiator is huge, need part# for a spare

Just fixed up the motor and truck's going to last another twenty years, but the radiator might not. Copper/brass construction rodded & soldered ten years ago but might not take it again.

It's a big 4-row measures: H 28", W 26 1/4", Core thickness 4" OD w integral tranny cooler in the bottom.

The shroud has this number under the Ford stamp, Left side: D7TA 8146SA. Right side shroud: TP 54049 | 605.

Haven't had any luck tracking down those numbers to locate a spare just in case... Anybody have a source for old reliable parts or a new copy of the original (what's that word)? Here's a pic, can take the shroud off if helps...

My book doesn't have that application.

Largest noted is 24 11/16" x 26 11/32"

D8TZ-8005-G

Can you find a stamping number on the rad for me ?
ie:
D8TH-8005 - GAA, GBA,GCA,GDA,GEA

D7TA-8146D-SA applies to a Fan shroud for a
1977and up F100 /F350 ... 400.... with Super Extra cooling

That's the same thing I (haven't) been finding....10 years ago a Rad shop in Coos Bay OR said a replacement was $640 salvaged with a rod & solder, so i had just had them fix mine instead. Ridikulous.

I'll go look for numbers on the rad itself.

Numbers on the back of the reservoir on top are fairly clear to read with a 4dMaglite lol:

D8TH GDA (no -8005- on this one)
M 11 11 *7

The * is probably a "2", it doesn't have the same shape or angles as the "7".

EDit: and Mil1ion, that 26 1/4" width is closer to 26" even, it's tough to accurize in the bracket...

Hopefully FTE user "Trinogt" will chime in with his rad part/stock number.

No online application chart lists a 4 row rad that I can find

Thanks for looking, the online outfits I see don't have it either.

Here's a measured photo of it,

Ah-ha. Ok, well, I did mine back in the fall of 2004, so make allowances for faulty memory.

Anyways, you're measuring it wrong (I did the same thing and confused myself); ignore the tanks and just measure the inside parts (where there are actual radiator flanges).

The short version is that for '79 there are only really four radiators, the big one (460 down to 351 with A/C/Supercooling), the regular one (V8, no A/C, usually), the little one (V6) and the I6 version. I eventually figured it out by going to the Ready-Rad site here and comparing the actual part numbers. They have all of the above plus a heat-buster model; that one is an enhancement, not an OE replacement.

Anyways, since I have an F-350 Supercab 4x2, that originally came with a 460, I am 99% sure the replacement number for yours is Ready-Rad #433545. But measure it properly and check me anyways.

The one I got was 250$ or so (I just had O'Reilly's order it for me once I knew the number) and an exact match, including the transmission line with the included adaptors, EXCEPT for the bolt holes, which are in the right location but differently-sized. (I had the thing in and was stuck for screws at 11pm at night; eventually I had to give up and improvise the fan shroud attachment using a package of fresh cotter pins that I did have on hand. Which worked quite well, actually.) Check the OEM screws against the replacement before you stick it; the optimal solution is to drill something out, I forget what.

HTH.

That shows it for the tank.. what is the measurement of the core thickness or cooling vane area?

The biggest one I could find was a proliance 433545, which is a combination of the old Modine numbers. It has the 4" wide tank with a 2 5/8" core, but it is only a 3 row radiator. It has the 26" by 24" numbers(rough measurement), with the tranny cooler built into the bottom. I found it at NAPA but had to special order. It took two weeks to arrive. Cost was about $300(2 years ago).

I just installed a new radiator in my F-250 Camper special. Its a a four row with auto trans cooler. It looks just like the picture of yours as far as the top tank and overflow outlet in the same position. I purchased it from Kragen.

Here is a link to the page I ordered it from.http://http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList.aspx?SearchFor=Radiator&PartType=31&PT Set=A&CategoryCode=&MfrCode=&MfrPartNumber=&st=0&s o=0&begin=21

I'll post a picture tommorrow but it fits just fine.

Thanks for the parts tracking help everybody. I took the shroud off and these are the best measurements I can get upside down & backwards in the space while it's mounted. Not including the top and bottom tanks. Comparing to the chart, my dimensions can certainly be adjusted a 1/16" to conform, except for the core thickness. I want to measure the front edge-of-fin to rear-edge-of-fin right? My measurement is 2 1/16", by maneuvering a C-clamp visegrip past the suspension and brackets and gently adjusting it till the jaws are touching the fins, then bringing it back out and measuring the gap. (I hinted to Donna I want a real caliper for birthday.)

So my measurements, core only are: H 24 11/16", W 26 7/32", Core thickness finedge-to-finedge 2 1/16" (the chart shows either 1 61/64" or 2 5/16" for motor homes.)

With your links to rad shops you have bought from now i know where to get a replacement if this one goes kaput.

Closeup photos of the stamped numbers from diff angles are:
D8TH GDA (no -8005- and only D8TZ listed on the chart)
M11 11 _7 (_ is prolly a "2", possibly a "7"}

Those FoMoCo charts are great Dennis, thanx for sharing, it's just weird that the SN doesn't have the "8005" and one dimension doesn't match up -- its tough to track down old parts, no bout adoubt it. Since my '95 is a keeper too, I'm photoing and logging all the major part numbers before they get corroded.

I couldn't remember its capacity and needed to change anti-freeze anyway, so... It is the 18quart ExtraCooling, not the 24quart Supercooling radiator.

Anyway, now I have links for a replacement rad if this one wears out, because the way the motor is running this truck will be good for years and years.

I luv old Fords
