AAAAHHHHHH spring has sprung! Birds are singing! Breezes are blowin'! Soft billowy clouds floatin' overhead! This time a year always means one thing...
Time to scrub ALL that salt and crap off from underneath my truck!!
This included my engine. Now, this ain't my old diesel where I'd give it a bath down with the ole high pressure do-it-yourself car wash place. So I thought I'd ask you all if you had any tips.
Last time I just wiped everything down with a damp rag. This time I think I'm gonna need a bit more than that.
The biggest problem I'm having is with the damn sand in the engine compartment. I used a hell of alot of Simple Green, let it sit, and spray it off with a hose. I've washed engines like this for quite sometime, and no bad effects have ever come from giving them a good rinse...but of course don't go crazy and DRENCH the engine in water, just quick sprays gets the job done. And for God's sake...let the engine cool off first!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Apr-02 AT 12:40 PM (EST)]This is a BAAAAD idea. The ABS module is afraid of water! Do a search, this has been covered in the Super Duty form.
In the "old" days with the big Ford distributor cap sitting right up on front of the block, I'd leave the engine running. At the very least I'd take paper towels & WD40 to dry the cap if the engine happened to die. Now, with EFI, I shut the trucks off. Have never had a problem getting them started again.
As for hurting anything, I also drive my truck in the rain and hit the occasional puddle created by bubba draining his stock tank (aka swimming pool) into the road. I don't see how these scenarios are much different than the car wash. Perhaps I've just been lucky all these years?
