uh oh, Why am I burning oil
Scary. Makes you wonder why a used 2000 model with only 10,000 miles was sitting on the lot.
Hopefully it's nothing too major. Best get it checked out as soon as possible though. And don't let them tell you it's "normal" or give you the dreaded NTF (no trouble found). Even if it means you have to leave the truck there a couple of days, show them the smoke.

I'm not privy to the head design of the V-10 yet.The mileage for the year seems low to me.Having said that I can say that if it is valve seals your oil usage will be minimal with good guides.I once had an auto that puffed a bit of blue at start up with 50,000 mi. on it.The engine went well over 300,000 mi.So if you aren't using any measurable amount of oil I don't think there is any pressing issue involved.

Hey there
I have a 2001 excursion LTD with the V-10. When I bought the truck, it did just as you describe. One big blue puff at startup after sitting for awhile. When I climbed a steep hill with a load, it would smoke and knock. Search the arcives for "smoke on start up" and get the details. I took delivery on a new truck with no oil return holes in the right cylinder head. They replaced the engine and told me there were 35 more like mine out there. If they don't come back, good for ford. That's a quote. I sure hope you don't have one of them. Look into the oil fill cap, if there is a level of oil in the head under the valve cover, get to the dealer and tell him what's wrong. If they're like the rest of them, they won't find it on their own.
Good luck.

I understand that this is a old post, but I am still looking for info on my start up smoke. A motor with 10k miles on it should not smoke ever.... Have been using 5-20 blended synthic and plan on trying 10-30 to see if it helps. Is this commmon to the v-10 , any one dealt with the dealer yet. Thanks

I had a 99 v10 f250 cc that did the blue and occasonally a blue- brown smoke plume on startup.Especially a cold start up.
I took it back to the dealer and he kept it 4 days and started it each morning until they saw it.
They put me in for a motor replacement under warranty which took 6 months. They lumped me in with the piston slap problems that were being experienced with the 5.4's and V-10's
The ultimate kick in the bal-- was the FQR (Ford Quality Replacement)
motor did the same thing after a few months.
My first motor used 1.5 quarts between oil changes but the FQR although it smoked, didnt burn any oil between changes.
I sold the truck a few months ago and ordered an 02 f350 psd .
Now I can burn oil on purpose!
There is a Ford tsb on the piston slap problem that advises the dealer to tell customer that the slap problem will have no effect on long term durability but if customer insists, REPLACE MOTOR!
Find a confidant at your dealer and research the tsb.
I used to have a copy but I cant find it .
Try a web search for the tsb too.
