Novice Question about Transmission Problems

The auto tranny of our 2000 Ranger XLT "slips" from 1st to 2nd and the O/D light is now flashing. A mechanic friend pull up OBD-II codes P0732 (Gear 2 incorrect ratio) and P1756 (Shift Solenoid #2 Performance). He thinks the solenoid may be sticking or damaged.

Would a bad shift solenoid explain both error codes?
What else could be causing the problem?
