Origanal intake mods questions

Has anyone heard of pulling the origanal intake box off of the F-150 and just leaving the air filter open? I just bought an f150 (1999) and the owner had it set it up this way. Is there any fuel effiency this way or any potential danger to do this. He was using a Fram air filter and not a K&N. Any inforamation would be great on this.

That should be a cone filter, but how does he have the filter stuck to the MAF? It will work, but I would want a heat shield and mount for the filter.
