12=3.89 rear axle ratio open 3300 lb axle.
The truck was assemblied in Dallas. The DSO number when more than two characters means that the truck is special/fleet order.
Per my 1962-1963 Ford Truck Shop Manual Supplement:" Trucks built to Domestic Special Order have the order number and the District Code number of the district which ordered the unit stamped in this space. If the truck is a regular production unit, only the District Code(two numbers) will appear".
This shop manual states that District Code 83=Government and that District Code 85=American Red Cross. Maybe the first two characters tell who the customer is and the subsequent numbers is the order number for that customer. But the text of the previous paragraph from the manual suggest that the order number comes first and then the customer number. But there is no customer code(District Code) of 17.
Interestingly--the highest consecutive unit (serial) number for MY1963 is 459,999 --per this Ford Supplement Manual for 1963 Ford Trucks. The serial range for Sept 1963 is 450,000 thru 459,999--lower than your "consecutive unit number" of 471391. Perhaps Ford had a real good production month of Sept 63 and over produced??
Or perhaps your truck is a early 1964 MY??
If this isnt true--the Number Dummy with correct me.
