I changed auto trans fluid for the first time this last weekend. All went well thanks to the info I got from this forum.
However, when I removed the small filter housing up front, removed the filter and cleaned everything up, I found that the small hard plastic piece (with the spring on it) that's in the bottom of the filter was cracked in several places. It was still in one piece but I don't trust it's structural integrety at this point.
Has anyone else ever noticed this? Does anyone else make an after market (metal) replacement for this?

Yes, ours was cracked also. And its not plastic, its a magnet to catch metal particles. I had to reinstall ours while the dealer ordered me a replacement, then swapped it at first opportunity.
Its called a part# "3C3Z-7C014-AA Bracket" on our 2004 E-450

Got less than 100,000 miles? Take it to the dealer and have them eval. it. If bad, free replacement.
The transmission is not covered by the engine's 5 year/100k mile warranty. The trans and rest of the powertrain has a 5 year/60k warranty, starting with trucks sold in July, 2006. Before that the powertrain (except the engine) were covered for 3 years/36k miles.
