2000 7.3 needs more power

Ok guys, I need a little advice. I have a 2000 F250 CC 4x4. Just put brand new tires on it, new ball jounts, U joints, PCM, all seals in front axle. I love the truck but it just doesn't tow like I think it should. I pulled a 24ft enclosed trailer with 2 sand rails in it this last weekend and the truck just wouldn't maintain speed. I know an enclosed trailer has the aero of a brick but i would think the truck would pull better. It does have 150k on the clock now. i bought it at just under 100k and never hauled much till now. So here's what i was thinking...

3 guage pod with boost, pyro, tranny temp guages
Bundle package from RPMoutlet.com with the CAI, 4" turbo back, and predator tuner.

I'm a ford guy by heart but after this past weekend I almost traded the truck in for a cummins on monday. Everyone I talk to with a cummins says they are great right out of the box.

I'm also averaging around 11mpg city which seems a bit low. I bought the truck from a friend who sais he got 13-14 regularly in the city. At 150k I'm thiking maybe it could be time for a turbo rebuild? Will the truck hold up to the mods I listed above with 150k on the clock? thanks alot guys!

i bought the two gauge package from rpm outlet didnt have great customer service with them but after about a month i got all the right part.. i would really consider getting a DP tuner instead of the predator tuner personal experiance and majority of the guys on this site are in love with the power of the dp tuner just my .02 worth

Well it sounds like you are on the right track, just make sure when you put on bigger exhaust you go with a bigger intake also. The 6637 filter does a good job for the price. Before spending any money on a Predator, you might want to give Jody at DP Tuner a call and get his system. Alot of members on here have gone that route, and are will pleased. I have the predator and i'm not knocking it buy no means, I really like mine, but when I save up the money I'm going with a DP Tuner. The milage is not a problem, it is just getting broke in. I have 294,00 and it is still running strong, I pull a 24ft gooseneck with a 10,500 dozer on 60 tow and it does fine. I believe once you do the mods you are talking about doing, you will be impressed with the truck. Stock they are a little sluggish, but with a little mod, they come to life.

I'm not to sure if you want a cummins, if you do get one don't get an automatic or you will be replacing the tranny every 35,000mi. Also if you pull in hilly terrain the cummins has a lot of low end torque, but not much high end so in the mountains when you downshift every one will pass you. I'm not nocking the cummins, but my friend traded his 99 F-350 for one and he says every day it was the worst mistake he ever made. All he does is pull 10,000Lbs+ trailers. Keep the 7.3 Powerstroke and mod it.

150K miles, low power, and only getting 11 mpg, I would start looking for boost and/or exhaust leaks. Sounds like you have a bit of a problem that needs to be addressed. Adding a chip will only make things worse since EGT's will be out of control. Fix the problem, then add power.

Exactly. Something is wrong and modding it will only make it worse. Look at the up pipes and intercooler boots and check them for signs of leaks. Take off the intake and look at the blades of the turbo. They should be smooth with no nicks and there should be no dust on them or in the tube. Make sure of all of this 1st before doing those mods. Once you figure out what the mileage issue is, then start with the 6637 and some guages. I went with Diesel manors isspro kit and it was fantastic. Great customer service nad very good directions. Then I HIGHLY rrecommend the DP tuner. Many here have had others and are very pleased when they switched. Jody, Diane and Bill are fantastic people and their customer service is great. Welcome to the site. You will learn alot if you put some time in here. This is a great bunch, with a tremendous amount of knowledge.

I agree with the previous two posts. Modding a broken truck is not going to work.
Also, what rear axle ratio do you have? With the proper gearing for the job even a stock engine will outpull a modded one geared too high.

I have the 3.73's. I was thinking there could be a boost leak myself. I replaced the glow plugs a few months ago and had to remove the boost pipes to get the valve covers off. the rubber connectors seemed kinda dry to me so maybe I'm losing a little boost through a dryrotted piece? I will inspect them all this weekend and order some replacements if necessary. If I add the guages will I be able to see a boost leak on a guage? What should the boost be?

Thanks for the info!

If it helps you convince the wife or g/f that you need guages then the answer is YES.
If she doesn't care then get them anyway and while your att it order up a new boot kit.
If you don't already know, do not go to dealer for boot kit, order it from one of our sponsors, youll save a bundle. Dont stress trying to find all the parts and fittings locally for your guages order a kit from Diesel Manor. everything is in the box and the instructions are easy to follow. A Saturday morning doing the install and you're good to go.
You can build a intake boost leak detector from plumbing pieces found at hware store, or you can order one from Bob at Dieselsite.com.

I did this pulling a hill with my trailer. 70 mph, 2500 rpm with the wastegate connected.
Stock turbo, 4" downpipe to 5" exhaust, 6637 air filter.
ZF-6 4x4 with 4.88 rear axle.
Diablo Predator tow/haul tune loaded at the time.
Since I installed the AIS air filter the EGT will go into the red zone now and I'm waffling on whether to remove the AIS and put in the 6637 again, but they let out a lot of intake drone.
