Sudden Jolt at 60-70MPH

Last two months comming home from work on interstate have experience a sudden "jolt" in power almost like a burp. It is sudden and over before I have a chance to "feel it out" and it has only happened about 5 times total. It is like an instant loss of power (split second) then back to steady speed again. All befor e you really know it. But it is there. Have changed fuel filter within last month, and have no other problems that I can relate to this symptom. It is almost like hitting a bump in the road with an instantaneous lifting of my foot off the throttle, but that isn't happening. Anybody experienced any symptoms like this. I keep thinking Cam Position Sensor, but I haven't any experience with this problem yet. I thought it really prevented starting rather than showing up during driving. Appreciate any feedback anyone can offer. The help from the participants from this site has been super all along and I greatly appreciate all.

The problem you are experiencing is called "bucking" and is most likely the CPS going out. Buy one and change it before it leaves you stranded or worse yet goes out while you are driving and leaves you with no power steering or brakes.

The part you need is F7TZ12K073B and here are the instructions to change it. It takes longer to round up the tools than it does to do the job. It's super easy.

He's right it is no fun when it's raining on I-65- rush hour and your engine dies and takes the brakes with it. I just bought my spare CPS for the glove box.

Here is another thought.....Not knowing what yaer truck....

Surge/buck/jerk at cruise, 50-60 MPH/1500-2000 RPM, 96 trucks after "California Cackle" calibration update, 97 and 99-2000:
There is a revised computer program for 97 California and 99-2000 engines to correct this concern. This is intended to correct the problem if it occurs when the cruise control is on. Broadcast Messages 9817 & 0054; TSB # 00-25-4.
If this condition exsists in a 96 model/year truck, if the condition is not completely resolved after this fix, or if it occurs only with the cruise off, try using <A href="http://www.intellidog.com/dieselmann/powers~1.htm">synthetic engine oil. Since most of the synthetic oils on the market are not specifically designed for use in the PowerStroke, a pint of the anti-foaming agent must be included in the oil change--Fleetrite/Navistar CH1824392 or Lubrizol 888. This may dampen the symptoms to an acceptable level.

Thanks for your prompt response! I am convinced, I will obtain a CPS within the next week or so (hopefully I won't regret waiting for deluvery from e-bay purchase) and I will change it out as soon as I receive it. Thanks again for your responses, and to the site that provides the forum for all of us to get together ansd discuss what the stuff that keeps us going.

Make sure to get the newer "gray" CPS Ford unit (it's only about $25 plus shipping), not the older black Ford unit (typically about $100-$120 at the dealer), not the "improved blue" CPS unit ($108 and seemingly not as reliable), and don't get an "aftermarket" unit from Autozone or OReilly's (they have a bad rep for sometimes being dead right out of the box).

The "new" Ford part number is the exact same as the older one, except the older unit has an "A" at the end of the part number and the new one has a "B" and is gray.

DFuser has them in stock, free shipping, $33 delivered to you. Here's the link.

OK guys, I ordered the one with the "B" at the end. I guess it will come next week and I will install and see how it goes. I will get back to you to let you know, but it may take a bit of time to prove out. Stay tuned and thanks agaian

Good deal. Keep us up to date. If the CPS isn't the problem we can all help you find what the real problem is.

My money is on the CPS though.

I have a 2002 F250 with 7.3 PSD. The same symptoms have been occuring for me around 45 to 60 when only when cruise is off. My dealer blames by Flashpaq tuner. Changed to the gray CPS recently which has not corrected the problem.

Any help?
