Well I'm doings the necessary body work on my 77 F150 and I will soon be painting it a Ford Forrest Green. I would like to paint some graphics on my truck before I clear it and was looking for ideas as to what some of you folks have done with your truck. I was thinking that I might use a silver paint for the graphics, but this is not set in stone. My truck originally came from the factory with the "Explorer" graphics package. If you have some pictures of your trucks graphics please post a link to them.
Here's a picture of what my truck looked like when I bought it back in 2006, with the "Explorer" graphics. In the picture the truck has a grill shell/grill from a 78 and I am putting the correct 77 grill shell/grill back on it after it is painted.
In the molding section of the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, is shown all the various tape stripes used. The catalog is available on a CD. hipoparts.com.
I was thinking more about some sort of stripe graphic over my Dark Forest Green paint. I had seen that episode of trucks where they painted the truck with those old time "Submarine Graphics," it looked pretty sharp but thats not what I looking to do with my truck. Thanks.
It would be cool if, since you're going forest green, you do your own kind of design and tie in like a park ranger type deal. I could see a faded round design in tan that says something about some type or park, or maybe game warden or something. Just an idea.
Hi there, I don't frequent this forum as a general rule, just cruizing today. You mentioned that you wanted to paint graghics before you applied clear but I was told and have read that it is best to apply a coat of clear first, then do your art work, if you have to rub off any work that you might not like, you won't be sanding into your colour. Once your satisfied with your handy work you can then apply your finnish coat of clear.

I had never heard that before. I've watched a lot of the truck/car shows like Trucks/Muscle Car/American Hod-Rod/ etc and they always put there graphics right on top of their BC and then clear over it, but there's more than one way to paint a truck. Thanks.
That will also make the graphics look like the stand out from the paint, kinda like 3D. I'm not a painter, but I've seen some done like this that look pretty cool. Seen others that look like butt. The difference is surprising given the thickness of the clear between the BC and the graphics.
I have a question about doing it this way, when you are clear coating a BC you need to adhear to flash times between coats of clear. What happens if you stop after one coat of clear coat and do your graphics, before you complete the other clear coat applications? Do you now need to sand the clear and applied graphics before you continue to apply the other clear coats?
The Explorer graphics that are on it now look good. Why not just go with those graphics again, but maybe in a different color that will go better with the new forest green paint job.

I am considering that as one of the possibilities, but I'm open to any suggetions. I have a lot of body work to finish up before I paint the truck and cold weather is approaching way to quickly, so my plan is to have everything ready for paint by next summer and hopefully I will have decided what I want to do with the graphics by then.
