I have a 64 1/2 ton 4WD that i put a 300 -6 cyl in from a 66 van econoline. it has a one bbl. carb. on it and gets about 16 mpg. anyway i have been pulling my camper with it of late and it is extremely lacking in power with this type of load on it. my question is. without putting a bigger carb on it can i increase the power by putting on a set of headers? i wanna keep the one bbl. as i like the gas milage. coming home last weekend bucking a wind the best i got out of it was 45 mph. any thoughts. Well Dutch, headers seem to be a touchy issue here at times, some hate, dome like them. IMHO, I like them, I have had a set on my 66 4x4 f100 for 25 years with no problems, no leaks and no loose bolts. Clifford Research makes manafoilds and headers for I6's. I'm a v8 person, so I don't know much about 6's, sorry. With that said, I get around 14+mpg out of my truck at hiway speeds, 10-12 around town, not much town here to drive in. With the right power to wieght ratio your mileage will be better.
The header would probably get you to 48mph. Some help but not huge. Switching to a duraspark distributor will give you more bang for your buck. If you can get a big heavy 4x4 with a camper movig at 45 mph in any conditions I'd say you had plenty of power. My dad has a toyota chinook minimotorhome. It has a 20r/4spd maxes out at 50mph 6% downgrade with a 60mph tailwind.

Dutch, I have never run a I-6, but a lot of readers here love them and brag about their pulling abilities. I first thought that maybe the gearing was way off, but early 4X4s usually had pretty low ratios which should favor the smaller I-6.

I think the problem is probably your gearing. We are seeing consistent 18-22 mpg out of most of the six cylinder 4x2 F100's in the Mid-Atlantic club. That's totally stock engines, BTW.
Check out that web site and see what they say. Those guys have found the answers to just about every question ever raised about the inline sixes.
The goat, 86 F150xcab LB 4x4 ran an offenhauser 360 dual plane with a Holley 390 four barrel. And i used the EFI cast iron hedders from a 86 up truck. Did consistant 18 MPG with the primaries leaned and the foot not leaning on the vaccume secondaries.

Hi Dutch,
You need a distributor that is custom curved to allow for the load you are pulling. Not only will it increase your torque, but it will also improve your mpg.
If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
