I'm just curious of anyone's possitive, or negative, experience with a MAACO paint job. And which paint job was it?

I know, I know . . . you get what you pay for. So on this project I'm not expecting that much. (A rock crawler VW Bug.) But for $600.00 to $1,000.00 it'd be O.K. right? Or no. Two local shops both wanted between $3K and $4K! Once they found out there was no insurance money involved , I think they hiked the price as a way of saying, "We don't want to mess with it."

 

I had a car painted by MAACO last year. It was one of the intermediate costing of their paint jobs that included primer and epoxy paint. They also did a little body work.

I would have to say it far exceeded my expectations for a discount paint job. The preparation and masking was excellent. They also painted the wiper arms, the backs of the mirrors and a band of underbody panel that comes a couple inches up the side with satin black.

The first paint shop I went to asked if insurance was paying for it. When I said no they said their paint jobs start out at $5,000. Then they recommended MAACO and gave me directions to get there.

If your planning to keep the VW for any length of time I woukld advise against it. The reason their paint jobs are so "cheap" is mainly due to thier poor prep work. Masking and taping off is only one step they should be pulling all of your trim off the exterior panels, by not doing this you will get lift and overspray regardless of how well they tape or back mask. They also tend to have alot of debris/solevant in the paint (again poor prep, and finishing proceedures) which over time comes to the surface and you will have "fish eyes" and ruptures in the paint which again contributes to peeling. If you are just looking for that good looking 20' er and are maybe planning to sell it then this would be an option. Otherwise unless she's a car of many colors you may be better off with the current paint.

 

Had a 90 suburban that got a maaco job. It turned out pretty good, but we didnt keep it long enough to tell if it lasted.

 

MAACO is cheap b/c they use cheap products. Their paint will only shine for a year or so and then become dull and un-buffable (if thats a word). I knew a guy years ago who got a paint job from them and he went to fuel up his car and the paint soffened when he spilled a bit of fuel on it.

 

A few years ago I had talked to the owner of Maaco in Medina Ohio. He has quite a collection of restored classica and streetrods. He told me they could do any paint job you want depending on your pocketbook. But he also told me he could do an awesome show paint job cheaper than most other shops useing quality products......So it basically boils down to the old saying "You get what you pay for"
