Should i worry?

So today i was beating on my truck a little... messin around on the high way, floored it and it went to about 4500rpm.. no im paranoid that im gunna destroy my truck

the trucks never been treated like that until i got my hands on it... kinda freaked me out when you could smell the heat in a sense when i got in my driveway..

should i be worried? or should i not worry as long as i dont do that all the time? i really dont want to destroy my truck..

No worries. I'd think a 5.0 should be able to handle up to 5,000 RPM on occasion. Granted, I wouldn't try that with my 300. Now, does your truck have a manual or an automatic?

You're fine. Mine shifts at 5200. Transmission stays below 170, coolant stays below 190 even when I beat on it or tow.

Your 5.0 should love the RPMs. I'd be wary of slammin the 5.8 around at that RPM for long... however. One of my work trucks is a 351 and she heats up quick shifting at WOT.

my truck ia Auto with an E4OD, next question, why can a 5.0 handle rpm's better than a 5.8?

its odd cause my tach has no redline, just tops at 6.. but i notice in the lightning (Gen1) the tach redlines around 5... hmmm...

its really fun wen ur on the higway and pull next to some one, then u go to WOT and the tranny downshifts... holy hell.. i can go from 50-75 in about 3 seconds

I don't know for sure, but one guess would be that the 351 has a longer stroke...

That scared me for a second till i saw his sig, i though that maybe he was talking about a 300, poor 300 does sound like its gonna fly apart when you get it that high, but the 302 should be fine.

I see people trying to run a 300 like a v8 all the time. Makes me sad.

If i floor it my 96 [302] will run to 5100 rpms and shift, If I manually put it in first and floor it, without shifting, it'll run to 5300 rpms and start bouncing off the rev limiter.

My 86 [351] will run to 4200 rpms, and shift when floored, shes old and beat up so I don't push it past that.

My good old 300 [82 f100] once spun to 4700 rpms, a older 90s style chevy 1500 was gonna try to fly past me and cut over, since his lane was coming to a end and merging into mine. I slammed her down in down in second at about 50 mph and didn't let up till just over 70. She held her own and he took his place behind me.

Most of my modern vehicles did well with this rule of thumb: first to second at 15, second to third at 25, third to fourth at 35, and fourth to fifth at 50. Not my 300-powered truck. I usually go from first to second at 10, second to third at 20, third to fourth at 25 or 30 (depending on the speed limit), and fourth to fifth between 35 and 50 (I only hit fifth above 40 when I'm merging onto the freeway, but I tend to leave it in fourth in town). If the Beemer jockeys don't like it, too bad.

It can't, there's no mechanical reason you can't spin the average 5.8 up to 5500rpms. But the truck motors are designed to make power between idle and 4500rpm, and the auto trannys are similarly calibrated with shift points, so you won't ever see these max rpms unless you have your leg straightened right out riding on the cylinder head. With a manual tranny it's a different story of course.

The 5.0 doesn't make the low rpm torque the 5.8 makes, and the heads and intake are not as restrictive to it as they are to it's big brother, so it's powerband has an upper rpm peak. This may be the reason the 5.0 seems to want to and need to rev more. The stock heads, intake, and cam all conspire against the 5.8 restricting maximum airflow capacity to something similar to a 5.0, so it's won't want to rev as high as the 5.0.

With my 2 5.0's i've ran
Redline was 5.5 i belive. I have no tach in this truck, so i'm unsure. I just go by the shift points when hot rodding with my 91, minus a few revs, because of the 3.55's vs the 3.05's in my nite.

The 5.0's love teh 3000-4600 band.
Mine purs for me at that level. I've not has as much luck with revving any 5.8's i've drove. I am quiet happy with the 302's.

5.8 is great motor. It's just designed differently, so its not going to shift or rev out the same as its lighter counterpart.
I would think of the 5.8 as more of a work motor. and the 5.0 as a raceing motor or a daily driver motor. but 5.8 will do it also.
