The cigarettes were nasty! That was back when I smoked, I would rather have had Camel NFs. Back when I was in basic at Ft. Jackson (Tank Hill, C company, 2nd Btn, 1st School Bde, 1st Platoon) you actually had to display a pack of smokes in your foot locker.

I started my military lowlites in the Army 30 years ago (1977).

I held MOS 36L (Electronic Switching System Technician), 36C (Cable Splicer), 72C (Switchboard Operator) and 55D (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Specialist).

Got off active duty in 1981, enlisted in the Air Guard, bounced between active duty and weekend drills until my retirement (reserve) in 2000.

It was actually funny, the first time I went to the field with the ANG, we did a Team Spirit in So, Korea in 1986. They chose me because of my "field experience", kept telling us we'd be in the field, rough conditions, hardship....yada yada. Kept thinking I have been in the field, slept in shelter halves on a leaky air matress, spent the night in fox holes, I can hang.

We get to Korea, we get issued a cot. then we get assigned to 12 man tents, with wooden floors, heat, hot showers 2 tents down, a laundry, a beer tent, an exchange tent, nightly USO bands....all the comforts of home. I ask the boss, "When do we go to the field, Sarge? "

His reply, "This is it; pretty bad, isn't it?"

That's funny, I enlisted in the Air Force in 1977 as a 541X0G (Missile Facility Specialist). I got out in 1981 after my 4 years. Then in 1987 I went into the Army National Guard as an 11B (Infantryman) in a LRS unit in Texas. After 4 attempts to get Airborne School, I went active Army in 1989 as an 11C (Indirect Fire Infantryman). I've been in ever since. Now I'm going to retire this November with 22 years active duty. I'm 47 and I still haven't figured out what I want to do when I grow up.

I'd rather have a full retirement, but I bailed with the reserve retirement.

In the Air Force my AFSC was 362X1 (Telephone Switching System) before the conversion and 2E6X0 after the AFSC change. When I retired it was 2E690 SEI 200 (Wire System Superintendant with Special Experience Identifier 200 = Engineering/Installation Team Chief)

Gee....I spent all 25 of mine in the Air Force. My dad started out Army and said that he figured it was better to be the guy left on the airplane when they kicked the Army out in chutes! LMAO. So I took his advice and wound up staying. 6 and half as an Air Transportation Specialist and all the rest as Special Duty Identifier 8R00....Recruiter! Geez I miss those days!

When I was at an inter-service school it 1980, it was explained to me this way:

In the Navy, the officers and enlisted get on a big ship, go out and get shot at.

In the Marine Corp and the Army, the officers send the enlisted out to get shot at.

In the Air Force, the enlisted put the officers in a plane and send them out to get shot at.

And we all know it's better in the Air Force! If you don't believe me, just show up at any Air Force chow hall and see how the Air Force guys are out numbered by folks from the other branches! LOL!

Just into my 13th year in the A.F. as a C-130 Crewchief (11 years) and now a Military Training Leader. While a crewchief on 130's we refered to the jumpers as "Dirt Darts." Especially the ones going out static line.

And while helping load a couple of Army Humvees on my plane at Pope AFB, the Army spotter told the driver to "Just back up until it sounds expensive." Being the only mechanic on board, that didn't inspire me.

Unfortunately, some of those aircraft getting shot at have enlisted crews on them to!!

Ok, go the the General Forum and in the non-automotive forum, there's a thread where we can continue this one.

Hey now.. I am offended.. We are not dirt darts LMAO! Well some of us were.. Those who didn't know the whole tuck and roll deal... I was also HALO qualified too.. Now you want a rush, thats a FREAKING rush..

I loved the C130's.. We had some of their gunships with us in the Desert.. Few times we called for some blazin Vulcan guns to rip up some terrain for us.. Those things are LETHAL..
