I am in the process of trying to obtain a new or slightly used Ford Excursion, Expedition, or 3/4 ton 4x4 crew cab pickup, really dont need the torque or noise of a diesel, so was lookin in the neighborhood of a 5.4 ltr, After reading what I could get my hands on that engine seems to have a bad rep concerning its head gasket rear passenger side, do all 5.4's have this problem, please pass on any information that you may have, or any way of identifying which truck would have this problem by code in the vin nr. Thanks Hugh
Some early 5.4's had this problem. I believe it was corrected in the '99 pick-ups, but some '99 Expeditions still had it. Anything 2000 or newer should not have it.
I have a 97' Expy, with 92,k miles on it,,no leaks at all, I am pretty sure the trouble was with th 99' 5.4 from the Windsor plant, there should be plenty of posts about it, in either the Expy or F-150 forum, my 5.4 motor has started the, famous piston slap when it starts ( well I think thats what the noise is )it does go away after 30 seconds or so, and had it to Ford, they would work on it ( I have the extended warranty ) but I have had past experince with other troubles resulting from letting dealer do so called needed work,,( dent in fender, loss of power), and just the hassle of not having my truck,,so I will wait until it definetly has a problem first,,.
You will have a pretty hard time finding and Excursionequipt with the 5.4L as they are only avialable in the 'base' model 2WD Excursion.
Also, considering the er, Heft (read well over 3 Tons) of these trucks the 5.4L is somewhat overmatched and I think that the 'sales' mix for Excursions is around 50% 6.8L V10, 40% 7.3L PSD and 10% 5.4L V-8. Just keep in mind that Ford produced Hundreds of Thousands of the 5.4L V-8s and many had no problems (I had a '99 F150 that went over 198,000 trouble free miles until a co-worker destroyed it in a crash)
In late '99 they bumped HP from 235 to 260 which helped alot. You will find many Expy and F150 owners (including me)rave about how well this motor performs, BUT when you demand the 5.4L to haul and extra couple THOUSAND EXTRA pounds around, it will be a little sluggish and feel 'underpowered'
You may not THINK you need all that extra torque provided by the PSD or V-10, but in a SUV that is as large AND heavy as the Excursion, you do.:-X12
