White Smoke, Fuel Pump runs on

Looking for some input. I just took a long trip, about 1500 miles pulling a 7000 lb trailer, camping through CA and OR. One morning when trying to start the X it had difficulty. I was at about 8000 FT elevation and it was about 60 degrees. The starter cranked strong but the engine didn't kick. It always starts on the 3rd crank. Thick heavy white smoke poured out of the exhaust. I noticed that the fuel pump never shut off like it usually does after about 10 seconds, it just kept on running. I tried cranking it 7 or 8 times but it wouldn't kick. I had my code reader and cleared a few codes that I believe were related to my tuner involving overboost, but not the no start situation. After about 15 minutes I came back and it started right up as usual. I've not had any more problems with it.
Could this have been a stuck injector? Glow plug problem? Fuel regulator?
Thanks for the input!

Your GPR is going out. Same thing happened to me last summer on a camping trip Crank and crank and crank, with smoke coming out the tailpipe, and no start. The bad part is my truck actually backfired at 6:30 AM in a completely full campground in Rocky Moutain National Park. Forest Rangers weren't too happy, they said it sounded like a dynomite explosion from a mile away.

As for the fuel pump thing, it will keep running if you crank and don't start. Cycle the key completely off to shut it down.

Thanks for the input Pocket! Since this is a California vehicle I assume it would be the GPCM (Glow Plug control module). I don't think I have a GPR. Any CA owners have this same problem?
