steering play

my boss has gotta '79 f150 and has been complaining that the steering is sloppy, or has alotta "play".

he bought it new in 79, and it has evidentally had this problem since 1980!
the steering box has been adjusted and tinkered with and ....no fix.

we were talking about our fords today and he was asking me, and i told him i didnt know but i know a crew that might! (hence the thread)

anyone have this particular problem?

being that old i would replace everything with the steering but the box, then if it doesnt help, then replace the box.

I had the same problem with my 77. Just jack up both front wheels and put them on jack stands. Get underneath and shake the front wheels. If anything is loose you will see it.

Mine was in the sector shaft to housing in the steering box. Some of these boxes never had a bushing in them and mine was one of them. When I removed the sector shaft, and picked up all of the bearing off of the floor , I realized that the sector shaft had worn the housing oblong and caused the slop. I put the micrometer on the sector shaft and there was no wear on the shaft itself, so I took it and the housing to the local machine shop they reamed out the housing and put a bushing sleeve in it. It cost about a hundred bucks to have it done, but it was still less than half the cost of a new one. That was over sixty thousand miles ago and the steering is still like new.
