how about a cummins 4bt out of a dodge? Same as the 6bt I just got out of a 250 ram pickup - going in my 74 crew cab 4wd.
The 4bt is an inline 4 with a turbo. Jeep guys do the swap as they are smaller than the inline 6 (6bt) and put out good power.
Technically it's not a "dodge" motor since Dodge contracted cummins and the motors are in blue bird busses, box vans, etc.
The only catch would be passing smog. But if you already have a ranger diesel title chances are you don't have a smog check needed.

I don't think the prekins had an aluminuim head did it? But even if it did, its not as bad as you might think, the only real danger is overheating which can warp it. Even if the head bolts can't cope (and I think they could), theres always thread in heat studs.
86 Hp sounds bad, but the 2.3 turbo will churp the tires, even in second gear sometimes, and I'm pretty sure that it can be built up, but most of the peops that have done it don't speak english! So gleaning info can be complicated.
The real limiter is when the wastegate opens, The engine can put out more than 86 Hp, but since its new I want to learn more about it before pushing my luck.
I did see a cummins 4bt in an explorer once, but that sucker is HEAVY! What was nice about the 2.3, is that it lined up the suspension perfectly after is was dropped in. In argentina, the ford superduty (they call it the f100 or f200) is actually offered with a cummins 4cyl, rated at over 200 horsepower.

These trucks are pretty rare, and finding them is gettng harder all the time. The donor truck that we used for our conversion was trashed to say the least, rusted out and all the glass was smahed.
So far I've only seen two other diesel rangers on the road, and chances are they're not for sale either. One of them looked like a restoration, and the other was used for towing a flatbed trailer. Both were long box, reg cabs (even the donor was).
Form what I can tell either no one bought the auto version or it was never offered with it from factory to begin with.
I have seen the odd one on Ebay, even a ram50 diesel, which uses the same engine.

You guys are not alone in wanting the diesel ranger in north america, but the EPA is on a witch hunt against diesels at the moment. Manuafurers will probably close the gap eventially, but as it stands right now, the engines are getting less efficient due to all the emissions crap, and the fuel has less energy in it to make it burn cleaner (side effect of making ULSD). Spend some time on the 6.4L diesel forum to get an idea of what can be expected.
The ranger down under is avalable with two seperate diesels, a 2.5 turbo and a 3.0 turbo, I don't think they even offer a gasser over there .
The same basic truck is avalable in europe and south america as well, basically anywhere but here .
Its rated for 7000lbs worth of trailer (same as my f150), and comes with a close ratio 5 speed manual, some say they can go past 30 mpg. In the UK, they are avalable with a hydraulic tilt steel utility bed as well. I guess ford just doesn't take the ranger seriously around here.

An `87 diesel Ranger just sold on ebay for $4800. Here's the auction #:
280158625435
I talked to a Ford engineer yesterday who works at the Oakville, Ontario plant. He says 2008 is definitely the end of the line for the Ranger. He has no idea why they're doing it either.
Maybe they want to bring the Edsel back and need the 'Ranger' name for that. Wouldn't surprise me.

These trucks come up on eBay from time to time. I've seen 4 recently. Not common by any means but they are there. I just need to find one that I don't have to have shipped across country.
That, or find a title somebody is willing to sell. At least those can be shipped across country - haha
