Has anyone had trouble getting a set of total seal rings to seat. i'm still using a quart every 100 miles after 1500 total miles.

Are you running synthetic? I've heard of people having trouble with this because the synthetic oil lubricates so well that the rings don't seat until they change it out for conventional.

LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-01 AT 10:16 PM (EST)[p]I haven't used Total Seal, but I thought they were different on the 1st and second rings. I thought they were 'gapless rings' They shouldn't be causing the problem. Do you have excessive blowby? Remove the valve cover oil filler cover and see if you have pressure or vacuume. I'd do a compression check and see if the rings are sealing ok or not. If you have good compression, I'd look at the PCV valve and valve stem seals. Remove the PCV valve and plug it off, see it that stops the oil loss.

Almost forgot, check the plugs for oil, if the oil control ring is not working properly, you'd get oily plugs.

I've been using 10w30 Havoline. Everything was done by the book including the breakin. Heads were already totally rebuilt and in use before being installed. It could be a manifold leak underneath but I'm afraid its cyclinder glazing. I have a restrictor in the pvc system that developes about 2" of vacuum in the crankcase. I guess I'll have to try a leak down test.

I had a friend with the same problem on freshly rebuilt c#*@Y 350. It was using a qt. of oil in about 300-350 miles. We ran a compression check on the motor and had a cylinder leaking down compression. We torn the motor back down and found a broken ring on the cylinder the was leaking down. I'm guessing we broke the ring when we were installing the pistons into the block.
My suggestion is to do a compression check, and if you have a cylinder(s) that is leaking down you may have a broken ring also.
