I am rebuilding a 360 and plan to upgrade to a 390...I see from other posts I will need a crank, rod and car pistons. This is my first attempt at rebuilding...any recommendations of where to get parts from would be appreciated, thanx, chuck
Chuck, the pistons you will want are TRW L2291Fs. These are a forged flat top with 4 eyebrows for valve clearance. They were intended as replacements for a 66-70 390 4 barrel galaxie or mustang engine. Any year crank and rods for a 390 will work fine, a 391 crank and rods will also work, but require more effort. Your local machine shop should be able to get you a crank for 100$ or less, used rods for 10$ each. Save your old 360 rods and see if they or the 390 rods work better to achieve the ideal of a zero deck hieght. Consider hardened valve seats for the exhaust and maybe the bigger valves from the CJ428, 1.65 instead of 1.55, the 390 suffers from too small of exhaust valves in stock trim. Most importantly, fix the oiling system. This is something you can do yourself, and most rebuilders don't want to bother with the extra 15 minutes it takes to do it. DF
DF...thank you for your time and input. I am asking around about local machine shops (san bernardino, ca). Would the crank be new or used? I have read on this site about the oil mods and will do them. The valve mods would be something any auto machine shop would be familiar with? Are manifold cracks readily visible? Thanx, chuck
Chuck, that would be a used crank, yes, the auto machine shop will know what to do on the valves. Sometimes you can see the crack, usually you can hear them while the engine is running. DF
