I seem to have a warped rotor, thats what it feels like. How can i tell what one or front or back? Seems like the front to me, but unsure. Do I need to replace or just have them turned? If replaced, are the oem ones the best choice, I would like low dust pads for sure.
04 6.0 FX4 about 50K on it.
Thanks for your input, John
If your front rotors are warped you'll feel alot of vibration in your steering wheel. I have had no luck turning rotors. I always replace everything, rotors and pads. I am in charge of maintenance on five ford truck as well as chevy's and gmc's and if your towing always go with new rotors. When they are new their harder to warp and turned rotors are skinnier so they are easier to overheat and warp again.
since the front brakes do the vast majority of the braking it is almost always the front rotors. in fact the only time i have ever seen a warped rear rotor was when the caliper was stuck and dragging on the rotor. the best way to stop or at least decrease rotor warping is to get the best brake pads you can. i have used performance friction carbon metallic pads nad they have always performed very well. i have also heard, and will probably try on my next brake job, the hawk LTS pads with the power slot rotors...you can contact mark at DPPI for the hawk pads and powerslot rotors
Not to be argumentative, but doesn't the ebrake have shoes that are inside the rear hubs? If so, and the rotor is warped, the ebrake trick would not work. Just as a side note, something that I have been doing for years and haven't had a warped rotor yet on my F-250 4x4, after I come to a stop, I release the brakes and let the truck roll forward a couple of feet then apply just enough pressure on the pedal to stop the truck. Read this trick somewhere on here I believe. I have 82000 miles on my truck and the original rotors have been turned once when I did my one and only brake job at around 56000 miles.
Thanks for your advise guys. I tried the ebreak and it seemed to slow the truck with no issues. Would I be better off just doing all 4 new or trying the front first. I'm guessing all 4 if i can save up some green.
The e-brake is NOT an emergency brake on these trucks, it's a "parking" brake - AND it's not using the disc brakes at all, there is a seperate drum-style brake inside each rear rotor. So that's not an issue.
The easiest way to tell where you have a warped rotor?
Do you feel it in the steering wheel? If you do not, it's not the fronts. It's obvious when a front is out
I've got an appointment to take the truck back to the dealership to deal with warped front rotors on Tuesday....that was the first day they could provide a loaner while they do the work.
I'll let you know how it goes. Should be easy as the truck is still under warrantry.

well brakes are not normally covered under warranty so i am going to go out on a limb and say they tell you it needs new rotors and pads and its going to be $580.00

had the same problem last year .I put on aftermarket front rotors and pads problem was better but not gone went to ford dealer and had new rotors and pads put on the rear the problem has now been gone for the last 35k miles. I would replace front a rear at the same time.
