Hi folks, my '76 is a custom. I assume that was the lowest trim level because I have no trim whatsoever. So whenever I need a fender or whatever, I have to fill in the little holes. There seems to be more XLT's than Customs around here. I would be curious to know if it's the same where you live. Also, I am very happy to own a Custom because that is just that much less I have to buy to restore the truck. Also, all that fancy crap just hold in mud and causes rust. What is everyone's favorite trim level?
Customs were bought by 1000's of construction companies and other businesses that worked them hard. Most were worked till they died. These same companies didn't buy fancy rigs. Bottom line: Today you will see more fancy rigs, because the plain janes were worked to death.

I have to say, I do see more rangers and ranger xlts than just plain cutstoms. Not to many explorers or lariats around my part, there are a lot more customs and rangers(xlt) than those.
As a matter of a fact, in my area, 4wds are RARE. There are only 4 around me(30 mile radius), and one is mine, and two are in junkyards.
I like all of the trim levels, but I guess I'm more partial to the Customs, since all 3 of mine are F100 Customs. My '73 is a Custom, and it has all of the trim like a Ranger XLT would have. It originally only had the trim down the middle(separating the 2-tone colors). I added the rocker panel and wheel-well mouldings when it was repainted.
My truck is "somewhere in between". I have race track trim, but the interior is plain jane.
When Race Track trim appeared in 1977, ppl lined up at parts counters (at least in West LA) and bought complete sets (would you believe less than $300.00 list for all of it?), and installed it on many different models. Look carefully at the holes drilled for the various clips. Are they factory? Could be the trim was added.
I have a Custom and a loaded Ranger Lariat. I like them equally yet differently. As far as comfort...the '78 Ranger Lariat is more comfortable/plusher/quieter than my '96 XLT.
I like the Custom just because it is the way most trucks were back then. It just represents the workhorse side of these trucks. It's louder, the cab echoes like a cave, and the vinyl laden interior stinks to high heaven. But the rubber mat laughs at muddy shoes, the vinyl seat sheds grease, and the lack of trim makes for a much better resoration budget.
That's why when I saw the '78 Ranger Lariat sitting in a yard for sale I bought it almost immediately. All of the Lariat trim was perfect. As was most of the truck. But with 22K miles it should have been.
