Timing on 96 F150?

Question Timing on 96 F150?

Ive tried everything to get my truck runnin smooth and nothing has worked and now im wondering if mabie its just the timing being off. I have a 96 f150 4.9L I-6 and i would just go out and time it myself but im not sure if that is controlled by the computer or if i can even adjust it at all.

How bad is the truck running and what symptoms are you having?

Why do you think its the timing?

The truck runs good and preforms well under throttle but if im at a stoplight or whatnot and ideling for a little while it starts ideling rough and I have tried cleaning the fuel injectors with some fuel additive, i have changed the PCV valve and I took apart the throttle body and it looks clean and it still is acting up. So the only thin that i can think of is the timing, also I just wanna check it anaways just because.

to check timing remove spout, it should be at 10 degrees btdc.

probably not the problem.

check codes.

check: plugs, cap/rotor, wires, and air filter

When everything seems fine and runs fine except for an irregular idle, I check the EGR to see if it's closing all the way.

Best way to check is to remove it and add a holeless gasket, then reattach it and see if the idle is OK.

Being it's only a test you could use cereal box cardboard.

You also could just stuff something into the hole in the manifold and test with the EGR off.

Thanks Quick.
It's always my first suspicion ever since I spent almost a year working on my 73 Dodge Charger back in the late 70's for the bad idle. It drove me nuts till a mechanic up the street tipped me off to it, after chasing a similar problem with his aunts dodge for a year. In those days EGR was new fangled technology.
