Any ideas as to what will/may become of our beloved V10?

After reading this... http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=121287

I was wondering if along with the dumping of the 5.4L in the F150, and replacement with one of their Boss engines; going as large as 6.2L, w/ upwards of 400HP and 400ftlbs of torque. Where will this leave the 6.8L Triton in the F250?

The HP wars are clearly heating up, and it looks like Ford is working on an answer to their much beleagured engine lineup in the F150s. With an engine slated to put out more HP and torque in the F150, what exactly does that do to the V10?

Would they replace it w/ the 6.2L? or bump up the displacement and/or HP and torque on the V10?

I've been pondering this alot lately, and know for sure if they kicked up the numbers on the V10, I'd probably be in line for a new truck. Nothing wrong with mine. It's just that I completely missed the HP wars with cars in the late '60s and early '70s. I now have the $ to get in on the action. I feel I did that in the early stages of this game when I picked up my current '06.

Just wanted to see what others were thinking about the current HP wars with out trucks.

Enjoy,
RustyFuryIII

I still think the 5.4 & 6.8 in the Super Duty are going away. Probably replaced with a single gas engine much like GM & Dodge. The 4.5 (or whatever it is) diesel might be another engine offering in the F250+ trucks too.

GM has a number of large displacement gas engines that is or could be used in different 3/4+ton applications. The 6.0L, 6.2L. 8.1L for example.

It is Dodge that only has one...right now...if the demand is there, guaranteed the 6.1L Hemi will be put in the trucks.

I think Ford needs to find a way to increase the output on both the 5.4L (desperately) and the V10. But we've seen that the V10 will hold its own in the category of truck it is put in.

It's a finicky, weird market out there. I predict the demise of all large displacement gas engines in 3/4 ton+ trucks by 2011.

The V10 is really a heavy-duty truck engine. It does it's job and keeps going and going and going.

I don't think a 6.2L V8 in ANY trim is going to put out more than the V10 3-valver does now.

They'd have to make it a 6.8-7.0L, and it's still a V8, putting out less torque overall than a V10 will.

Interesting topic (again)

Yeah, they could offer all those engines, but they don't.

I don't know if Hemis come in different flavors or not but this weekend I saw a black Dodge 3500 dually with a 5th wheel hitch an a HEMI badge on the fender. Frankly I was shocked and had to do double take.

The other day I saw a new body style Dodge with a V10 emblem on the front fender. It's the only one I've seen in person. Had to be an '03 since that motor was dropped for '04.

As for our V10, I'm sure it'll be gone one day. Just like the 390 and 460. Ford, I believe, doesn't know how good this motor is. With a little marketing, sales would be much better.

But they might. Guess what I'm saying is that large gas engines are not dead. Who knows the future of the V10. Only reason I can see it going away is if it stops being able to meet any future emission standards.

Rob17, Dodges has two flavors of HEMIs. The 5.7 that most know about and what was in that dually you saw. And the 6.1L that is being used in the SRT line of cars like the 300, Magnum & Charger. It specs out at 425hp / 420 tq.

There is an entry on Wikipedia referring to the coming Boss (formerly Hurricane) engine being made available in a 6.2L at first, with a 7.0L to follow.

I think as of a now the engines above 6.2L have been canceled. Ford was testing a mustang they called the 777:7.0l-7000rpm-700hp very recently, but it was "an engineering excersize". By 2011/12 a DOHC DVCTi GTTDi 6.2L should ("might") be out. (double overhead cam, dual variable cam timing, gas twin turbo direct injected) Rumors are putting it at over 625 ft lbs tq. The SOHC 2v 6.2L BOSS that we'll see in late '09 in the F150 will be at 425hp and 425tq. I don't see why they wouldn't also offer the 4.4L diesel in the superdutys as a economy engine, but we'll have to wait and see on that one. We'll also see a 6.7L ford designed diesel after the 6.4.

At least, thats what I've gathered from some pretty reliable sources on blue oval forums.

Who knows though, CAFE could kill all these beasts before they're released. It does look like Ford is going towards GTTDi engines to get better fuel economy and still have tons of power when you get on the skinny pedal. They're calling them twin force - that twin turbo v6 we saw in the recent MKR concept will also make its way into the F150 eventually.

i got this off a member of a diff ford truck forum (not as good as this one ) but i dont no how accurate it is......

" LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT

The Edmunds article is COMPLETELY INCORRECT

Their sources basically messed up the releases of the Twin Force engines and the base version of the same engines ..

The below is what I have been posting all over the internet .. and THAT BELOW .. IS CORRECT - unlike the Edmunds piece :

The truck will launch in the fall of 2008 (as a 2009 model) with:
4V DOHC PFI 3.7l V6 (about 280 ft.lbf at 2000 rpm) (not sure about transmission)
3V SOHC PFI 4.6l V8 with 6speed auto (Explorer combo - 292 hp and 300 lb.-ft)
3V SOHC PFI 5.4l 6speed auto (Expedition combo - 300 hp and 365 lb.-ft ) - likely with somewhat more power than this (about 325hp and 380lb-ft)
NO BOSS ENGINES

2009 1/2 Model (Februaury 2009) will add:
2V SOHC PFI 6.2l V8 BOSS engine (iron block, aluminium head) with 6speed auto (425hp)

2010 Model (fall 2009) will add:
DOHC 4.4l Common Rail Diesel with CGI block (315hp and 520 lb-ft)
4V DOHC TT DI 3.5l V6 - Twin Turbocharged Direct injected (Twin Force - 350hp, 380 lb-ft at 2000 rpm)

2011 or 2012 model will add:
4V DOHC TT TIVCT DI 6.2l V8 - Twin independent variable cam timing, twin turbocharged, direct injected (Twin Force - over 650 lb - ft)

So in short: The truck will launch with the 3.7l V6, the 6.2l V8 will be 6 months late, and the Twin Force 3.5l V6 and the Diesel will be 12 months late.

Dito all of this. Exactly what I've heard.

I have loved my V10s from the first day I bought my first one, I never thought I would run to a dealer and dump my beloved 460 that I used for pulling but after running my V10 work truck that is what I did. If Ford comes up with a better motor so be it. The V10 is a smaller displacement than the 460 and it outperformed it hands down with a large gain in fuel mileage.

Unlike GM and Dodge Ford has alway offered a good gas pulling motor for the industrial RV industry and hopefully they will keep doing the same in the future not that I want the V10 to disappear but we have no control over that it's up to the EPA regulations and what Ford will have to do to meet it.

It sounds like I will keep my V10 until 2011 if I want the animal version of the new motor but its 7 years old with only 67K so that shouldn't be a problem
