Does anyone know of a well made nice fitting tonneau cover for a 49 F1? Or would I be better off making my own out of some square tubing and plywood, and covering it with vinyl? Thanks.
I am also very interested in what others have done. My 03 Ranger has a Truxedo cover that I really like. It would be great if I could get or fabricate that style to fit my F-1. The idea of strips of velcro as opposed to snaps as the fastening along the underside of the rolled sides of the bed really appeals to me.
So who out there has other ideas?
Here at Truxedo we can custom build a cover to go with the classic trucks. Check out our gallery to see some of the ones we have done in the past. http://www.truxedo.com/maingallery/gallery.html
Just fill out the box detail sheet and take it to your dealer. Click on the custom application link on the left of the page to get that sheet. Also, while you are there you should take a look at the durabilty video. You will see why we can offer a lifetime warranty on that cover.
And if you do get a Truxedo Lo Pro cover for your truck, we would love to feature it in our gallery if you send us a photo.
Kellie, Thanks for responding. I had already looked at your website and the custom covers portion of the site. The Ford beds for all of our years are built like the maroon colored truck that is in your website with the bedsides that angle out at 45 degrees at the top. The one on your website shows the custom cover located inside the angled portion of the sides which would invite the leaking of rain in the side-OK for fair weather cruising but not weather tight like my Truxedo cover on my 03 Ranger. My idea would be to locate your rail systen that the bows sit in off uprights that would fasten into the 4 stake pockets (two per side) and then the felcro would be stuck to the underside of the rolled top of the angled sides such that the velcro surface on the edges of the fabric roll around the rolled portion at the top of the angled bedside. Similar treament could be done at the tailgate since that also has a rolled top, it however sits lower that the rolled portion of the bed sides.

What do you think?
I think it's definitely worth looking at. I'll forward your idea to the engineers to see what they think. Thanks for the suggestion!
Kellie, Thanks for the response. Please let us know if you get interest by the company in pursuing this kind of design. I think that it could work well and not require modification or drilling any holes in the bed. I would be happy to work with someone at Truxedo to get a prototype going. Send me a pm for contact information.
Don't know what happened, tried to post a reply and it got lost (maybe). I don't know how it would work on your 49, but a GemTop hard tonneau worked real well on my 59 styleside. They cut down a regular hard tonneau to fit. There is a GemTop dealer in the Portland, Oregon area so it was a matter of taking the truck out there for measurements and then installation. I will try to post a picture of it so you can see.
I suppose the nicest weather proof unit I have seen is the Pro's Pick and now it is made in a 2 pc version, but the price is way too high and I do not think it is any better than RJ'S unit. I am going to make my own as well from a laminated alumnum sheet that is widely used in the sign industry. I comes in large sheets and is light but rigid.I am going to copy the side attachment of the PP unit. No pics yet, I am planning.

I know truxedo won't like me recommending this but, *******'s make some really nice fitting fiberglass lids for classic trucks. Most trucks with the fiberglass lids I see at car shows have *******. Check out their website.
Just to comment on Randy Jack's lid. It's definitely nice and you can even stand on it. Well, maybe Randy could, I can't. Built Ford tough!
