I highly doubt it, as the only time I've ever seen those engines make power is in the 3600-5500 RPM range, and at 2400 @ 55 MPH, I think he's a bit shy of his torque curve yet. What do you guys think?
a close friend a born again chev man who makes his living building chev race engines tryed the 3500 gasser way out starting with 454 then building 502 with everything he could throw at it
to shorten the story one weekend he has to use a PSD to pull his 38 ft race trailer ,bought him one been doing it every since except now pulling 52 ft

Alright, bet is on for today. We're using his truck to haul to a race party, and my gut feeling is that neither of us are going to like it. Since I'm the designated tow vehicle driver, lol, I'll know before we even get a few miles in. but anyway, here's the matchup:
2002 Ford F250, 2WD, 7.3, 4R100, 3.73 Trac-Loc, total weight, with driver 7130
vs.
2002 Chevrolet 2500 HD, 4x4, 6.0, 4L80E, 3.73 Posi-Trac, total weight with driver 6190
Fighters, to your corners!!

VQ2Fast4U: Gauges would be awesome. I'm curious as to what I'm doing right now. I never push it hard with a load, never going past 50% throttle. Nice and easy, no rush, we'll race when we get to the track sorta thing.
Ron: I know a Pyro would be best. That's why I haven't done any tuning as of yet. I guess I was just asking out loud if a 40 tune would be somewhat safe given my current mods. I want gauges bad, as well as a tune, but right now there is 'insufficient fundulation' for either. ELC it is, then.
Kwik: I guess that answers the question about if it'd be safe with my mods. I do have
3.73's. I guess what irks me is that it just feels gutless below 1500 RPM, which is ~ 55 in OD. If I run at around 1800 RPM, approx. 65, it feels much more peppy, and for some reason, I net better fuel economy.
bfife: A gear change would help, but, if I'm going that far, I may as well sell the truck, get a '99 or '00 Dually and a beater for daily driving. At my size( I'm 6'7", 345) not too many vehicles fit me that well. Besides, I like my current truck because it's mine, it's trouble free, and it does a decent job. I'm just wanting to make it a little better. I know I can't expect 16 MPG while towing a 10,500 lb, 11x8.5 ft box, but, maybe a little better than this.
Now, as for what to do.
1. Not tune, and just focus on upgrading for reliability
2. Sell or trade for an older, lower mileage F350 Dually. I have no need for 4WD. With the dually, I'd be giving up between 3-5 Highway MPG, but, moving closer to town, I'll be on the highway less, and it makes better sense for pulling the toys around.
3. Start dropping money on upgrades for the current truck. Gauges, tuner, Rear Gear, etc.
Well, now for some opinions on that. Let me know what you think.

Results are in:
And the winner is, F250 by a landslide margin.
My impressions of the Chevy are that, while unloaded it feels peppy, with a trailer, it squats way more than a truck of that tow rating should, even with my load stabilizing hitch. The truck had almost uncontrollable sway. It had a 4.10, not a 3.73, and in 3rd gear, it felt more doggish than mine in OD. Fuel mileage was surprising, as it only used about 4 gallons to go 39 miles.
So to wrap it up, I'll use mine. I may not win in the stoplight drags, and it may not be whisper quiet and ride like a car, but, it get's the job done, and makes me appreciate it, even if it isn't a dually. I will never, and I mean never, tow with a gas motor truck again.
As far as the prize? I don't mind driving around near a smuch when I'm using someone else's fuel in my tank
